#AMD crafts custom #EPYC #CPU with #HBM3 memory for #Microsoft #Azure – CPU with 88 #Zen4 cores and 450GB of HBM3 may be repurposed #MI300C, four chips hit 7TB/s
#HBv series of Azure #VM are focused on delivering high amounts of memory bandwidth; Microsoft calls it “biggest #HPC bottleneck.” Previously, Microsoft had used #MilanX and #GenoaX with AMD 3D #VCache to provide extra bandwidth, but for latest #HBv5 VMs, Microsoft clearly wanted something even more performant.

#AMD #EPYC #GenoaX has three SKUs ranging from a massive 96 core, 1.1GB L3 cache part to a crazy 16-core 48MB L3 cache per core CPU. Perhaps the crazier chip is the AMD EPYC 9184X which has the same 768GB of L3 cache for a total of 48MB of L3 cache per core. The $4928 list price of that part may seem like a lot, but if you are optimizing on per-core performance, that extra L3 cache can have a huge dollar impact.
