So I have a #Generac whole-house backup generator. It's practically a necessity here in New Hampshire; the trigger point that got me to buy one was the winter when our power was out for three days, and the house got down to 36°F inside, and I got up Christmas morning and was literally just about to declare "Fuck this, we're evacuating to a hotel", when the phone rang and it was Eversource promising to have our power restored within two hours.
Generac has this generator monitoring app called #Mobile #Link. But the last update to it, about a year ago (forced update; the old version would no longer connect) won't run on #Android 11 or 12 any more, which means no mobile device in the household can run it. I poked Generac about this on Friday, and they got back to me with the excuse:Generac makes the excuse that "Due to the app requirements to work, doesn’t allow compatibility with older versions of Android operating systems."
Oddly, whatever 'requirements' it is that 'prevent' Generac Mobile Link from being backward compatible to older Android releases do not seem to be any obstacle whatsoever to LG, Samsung, Whisker, Chamberlain, AprilAire, Sleep Number, WUUK, Roku, or Winix, all of whose Android control and monitoring apps still work JUST FINE.
There's a reason I chose the word 'excuse' above, not 'explanation'. Because I'm guessing the REAL explanation is that whoever builds Generac's Mobile Link app simply decided not to bother to make the current version compatible with older Android versions.
If it no longer ran on Android 5 or 6, I could understand that. Probably few devices still locked to Android releases that old are still alive. But 11 and 12? Come on. They're not even that old. You're not fooling anybody. You simply couldn't be arsed. -
Ever since Generac bought ecobee, there have been numerous outages of their cloud service, the app's features have stagnated or gotten worse, and it's buggier.
Yesterday they had a 5-hour service outage, and today my ecobee macOS widget won't connect, and the iPhone app says the furnace fan is running when it's not.
Just give me direct phone and browser access to the thermostat. I don't need or want a useless, unreliable cloud service.

Have a #generac #wholehouse #generator and have a question about its internal #battery
Last annual test/servicing, the tech suggested that I run the generator for 1 hour once every 3 months to keep the internal battery fully charged. Additionally test the automatic fail over during those runs.
Seems like an expensive way to keep the battery charged. Anyone doing this? Alternatives? TIA

Today was supposed to be a smooth final installation of our #Generac generator system. Power company stopped by @ 7:40am to disconnect meter. Done. Electrician begins connecting electrical between generator and house at 8am. Good so far. 4:30pm inspector is a no-show. Now we have to rely on generator until tomorrow (or when they feel like coming by). Meanwhile, our natural gas bill is going to be huge. At least the generator powers everything in the house.

Just ordered the #Generac system today. $14k and a 2 month wait now.
