  1. Ok, ok, here me out. After losing track of who was what in my family tree I had this brilliant idea: the metric system for ancestors!

    Grandparents = Kiloparents (ok)
    Great Grandparents = Megaparents (cool)
    Great² Grandparents = Gigaparents (very cool)
    Great³ Grandparents = Teraparents (not as cool but they are dead so n.b.d.)

    We can do the same the other way:

    Grandchild = millichild
    Great Grandchild = microchild
    Great² Grandchild = nanochild
    Great³ Grandchild = picochild

    No longer will you have to count on your fingers when you talk about distant relatives!

  2. Although it still needs to be all verified, turns out I’m the direct descendant of:
    3rd Baron of Glorat (Scotland)
    15th Chief of Clan Buchanan
    A shit ton of colonialists
    One of the founders of Springfield,MA
    The guy who led this:

    The guy who was on the wrong side of history in Brom and Bett v Ashley which was the case that helped invalidate slavery in Massachusetts
    Veterans of the Revolution, War of 1812, civil war (both sides), WWI, and Korea

    And, if it is to be believed, a family on the Mayflower

  3. No, You Don't Really Have 7,900 4th Cousins

    DNA has the potential to be an essential and exciting genealogical tool. But many Eastern European Jewish testers find their DNA results completely overwhelming and unnavigable.

    In this talk, Jennifer Mendelsohn will help those with Ashkenazi heritage learn how to make sense of their DNA results.

    She’ll cover the basics of DNA testing, including why our match lists are so large (hello, endogamy!), why all our matches seem to match each other (endogamy, again!), and how to spot the meaningful matches and separate them from the faux ones.

    Using real-life examples of DNA success, you’ll learn techniques that will help you work effectively with DNA to expand your Ashkenazi family tree
