  1. Just because you've given up on your pronouns, presentation, etc. being respected in the past, doesn't mean that you need to continue to let it go.

You can change your mind about what you're comfortable with. You can tell people what you need in a relationship with you.

The ones who care about you will try, in earnest, to respect your needs.

  2. You're probably going to have to try out a few things before you find your version of "nonbinary."

New styles, names, pronouns, even medical steps are things you might consider. That's okay. With most things you have to explore and experiment in order to learn.

    Enjoy the experiences!

  3. Nonbinary people can wear anything and still be nonbinary.

So, if there's some piece of clothing, an accessory, jewelry, etc. that you like, then wear it (keeping issues of safety in mind, of course).

You, a nonbinary person, of all people should know that rules are meant to be broken.

  4. Jalan and I were talking to Dragonlet (8) about gender, using the Genderbread Person model. The timing is influenced by Dragonlet recently coming out to us as nonbinary.

Among other things, the model separates out Gender Presentation.

So I said that I have a fluid gender presentation, as I wear skirts as often as not and blouses with them when I can (I don't have enough), even though my gender identity is male.

Jalan pointed out that genderfuck might actually be more apt.

I reflected that one of my favorite looks is black pencil skirt, black hose, and very red blouse with matching nail polish, but I wear that in combination with shaved head and full beard, and I don't give a damn that I've got a belly and no breasts or butt.

    Yeah, she's not wrong.

  5. What is the actual function of gender being on ID cards in a society that doesn't have specific laws around gender presentation?

  6. It's hard and often dangerous to be yourself as a nonbinary person.

The way you dress or otherwise present yourself now might be more authentic, but it comes with a price. You shouldn't have to pay it, but, nonetheless, you must.

It's alright to grieve the loss of respect you once received from strangers. The new love you're shown by other queer and lgbtq people will help heal you.

  7. You're nonbinary even if you "look cis" according to some.

Nonbinary people take many forms, many of which are dissimilar from each other. Your appearance is simply another normal variation.

    You have nothing to prove.

  8. You can be nonbinary and express it in unlimited ways.

All options, orientations, and flavors are yours to experiment with or use as you like.

    Enjoy yourself boldly.

  9. Lonliness can be a lingering fact of life for some of us.

Your presentation might make you stand out in every place you enter. Or, perhaps you blend in so well that you're invisible. Either situation is a recipe for isolation.

But you're not alone in the world (even though it feels like it). There are other nonbinary people who share a large part of your experience, and friendships can form in the most surprising of places.

    You'll find your people.

  10. There are many ways to be feminine, masculine, or both if that's what you want as a nonbinary person.

People of all kinds have explored the ways in which these qualities can grow, flex, merge, and change.

Add your own variation to the mix as you will find your path through it all.

  11. It’s a guarantee that there are people who won’t like how you dress as a nonbinary person.

But what really matters is that you like how you dress.

If you are happy, then no amount of naysayers can stop you.

  12. It's important that you express being nonbinary in your own way.

No matter what you do there will be pressure for you exist certain ways, and those demands will conflict with each other. Living to satisfy everyone is not possible.

Live for yourself. Be nonbinary as you see fit for you, and it'll be enough.

  13. Even if you're nonbinary and you normally dress in a feminine or masculine way, it's fine to change things up.

"Feminine" and "masculine" are fairly arbitrary categories even among cisgender straight people.

You might as well enjoy the some of the perks of being nonbinary and not give a sh*t.

    #nonbinarypositivity #nonbinarypride #nonbinary #genderpresentation

  14. Shout out to the nonbinary people who aren't very feminine, not particularly masculine, but aren't androgynous, either.

    Keep being categorically you!

  15. It's alright to do the bare minimum at least sometimes.

You might be too tired to correct the same people, yet again, about your pronouns. The clothes you managed to put today might not represent you very well. It's alright if you just want to go to the store without people trying to "clock" you in who knows what way.

It's all fine. The bigots didn't win because you were exhausted. You won because you made it through another day.

    Live first. "Live well" later.

  16. You can change your gender presentation, or even just your style, whenever you want.

It doesn't matter how long you've been a certain way. Shake things up, if you like.

It's your life. Have a good time with it.

  17. Body hair can only enhance your presentation.

Body hair can be gentle, soft, and delicate.

It can be rugged, imposing, and even beastly.

It can be simply there in all its fuzzy, unpredictable glory.

Body hair is exactly what you make of it in regards to your presentation, because it’s another aspect of you.

    Nothing more, and nothing less.

  18. There's no "one size fits all," when it comes to how you'd like to be treated as a nonbinary person (besides basic decency).

Maybe pronouns are very important to you, but you might also not care. Perhaps you're not concerned with how others see you. Or, maybe "passing" is extremely important.

Your needs will be unique because every nonbinary person is unique.

  19. Your nonbinary fashion can come from thrift stores, drug stores, department stores, sewn yourself, all the above and more.

However you build your style, it'll be perfect for you because you chose it.

  20. Dress in a way that you feel emphasizes your gender.

Since presentation does not equal gender, your style can be anything that pleases you.

Your presentation is your business. When you have the option, don’t let anybody get in the way of you.

    #nonbinary #nonbinarypositivity #genderpresentation ..

  21. Your gender presentation or ideal appearance can be anything at all.

Your desires in this can be "strange" or "unusual" to others. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone but you.

It needs to do just one thing, and that is make you feel complete.

Strut your stuff in all the greatness and variety of a rainbow.

    #nonbinary #nonbinarypositivity #nonbinaypride #genderpresentation #appearance ..

  22. It’s not wrong to be afraid to present how you want even if it’s “technically” safe enough for you to do so.

We are not born brave enough to take everything on.

Courage is something you build, and you build it at your own pace. So, take all the time you need.

This is no race, and there is no finish line.

    #nonbinary #nonbinarypositivity #nonbinaypride #genderpresentation ..

  23. You are nonbinary no matter how many or how few people can see it.

One person may sport very visible tattoos, and another may have hidden ones. Still, both people definitely have tattoos.

So, being visible may be a good or bad depending on your situation, but it has nothing to do with the fact that you are nonbinary.

    #nonbinary #nonbinarypositivity #visibility #genderpresentation ..

  24. You shouldn’t have to be “obviously” nonbinary in order for others to take you seriously as a nonbinary person.

Anyone who expects you to look a certain way before believing that you’re nonbinary doesn’t actually respect you.

And you don’t ever have to compromise on who you are for another’s convenience.

    #nonbinary #nonbinarypositivity #nonbinaypride #exorsexism #genderpresentation ..

  25. You can create a place in every kind of fashion or style to express yourself in your own unique nonbinary way.

Fashion changes throughout the centuries. You can be a wonderful part of that continuous transformation.

    #nonbinary #nonbinarypositivity #nonbinaypride #genderpresentation

  26. If you are still looking for your “style” or the best way to express how you’re nonbinary, don’t worry.

Maybe you’ll build it over the years or maybe you’ll  find that you’ve had it all along.

One way or another, you’ll find it one day.

  27. You can be a feminine/masculine nonbinary or genderqueer person even if that technically lines up with your assigned gender.

You're not just faking it, trying to seem cool by breaking gender roles (that can't even apply to you), or are otherwise a cis person with a twist. Your gender situation is real, and no one's shallow ideas can change that basic truth.

And you do not have to change yourself just to match what others think a nonbinary person should look like.

    #nonbinarypride #nonbinary #lgbtq #nonbinarypositivity #exorsexism #genderpresentation

  28. You don't have to choose between being either feminine or masculine.

You can do both, more of one and some of the other, neither, invent something new, mix new and old, combine them all, and more!

You have broken the binary once already. There's no need to go easy on it now.

    #nonbinarypride #nonbinary #lgbtq #nonbinarypositivity #genderpresentation

  29. It's alright if your presentation changes over time. You're just as much a nonbinary person as you've always been.

There's no need to stay the same when the world around you is growing and changing, too.
