A Map of Gender-Diverse Cultures
This text and the language in the corresponding map was updated in consultation with a world gender expert in October, 2023.
"Throughout recorded history and since time immemorial, thriving cultures have recognized, revered, and integrated more than two genders. Terms such as #transgender, gay, or bisexual are Western constructs that often assume three things: that there are only two sexes (male/female), as many as three sexualities (gay/straight/bisexual), and only two #genders (man/woman).
"Even after the end of the modern era and as the #colonial period wanes, hundreds of distinct #Indigenous societies around the globe still retain their own long-established traditions for third, fourth, fifth, or more genders. The subject of #TwoSpirits, Fred Martinez, for example, was not a boy who wanted to be a girl, but both a boy and a girl — an identity his Navajo culture recognized and revered as #nádleehí. Meanwhile, Hina of Kumu Hina is part of a #NativeHawaiian culture that has traditionally revered and respected #mahu, those who embody both male and female spirit. It’s not uncommon for third gender people to perform critical spiritual and religious functions in their communities.
"Among many Indigenous societies, two prominent features often distinguish the lives and social roles of third gender persons from those of cisgender persons or contemporary transgender persons in non-Indigenous societies. The first is that many Indigenous terms for third gender people contain both the word for 'man' and 'woman' in their construction, and that #ThirdGender people are seen as embodying both of those genders in diverse ways. The second is that the history of many third genders is in the community role of religious specialists, which also takes diverse forms, depending on the beliefs of diverse cultures. While not all third gender persons are defined in these terms, across our species, this phenomenon of the third gender religious specialist, healer, or spiritual worker has been part of our #CollectiveIdentity and human experience since time immemorial.
"Since the beginning of the 21st century, we’ve seen tremendous expansion of the role that transgender, #GenderDiverse, and third gender people have in society, following the tenuous establishment of civil rights for #gay and #lesbian people in many nations and increased access to #genderaffirming care in the transgender community. Many Indigenous transgender people who also identify as third gender are familiar to large audiences via their participation in popular media or social media activism. Third gender people, like the Japanese-Samoan, #Faafafine artist Yuki Kihara, now participate in major global cultural events and function not just as representatives of their gender-based community, but of their nation. Kihara had both a solo exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and represented New Zealand at the 2021 Venice Biennale. [For more: '#LGBTQIA+ Pride and Two-Spirit People' in Smithsonian Voices.]
"In the 21st century, many third gender people choose to take advantage of #GenderAffirmingCare, and identify, in addition to being third gender, as transgender. As access to gender-affirming care parallels healthcare access, and both third gender and Indigenous persons are often marginalized economically, it is not as readily available to many Indigenous transgender people, and within Indigenous cultures, medical transition is often seen as separate or secondary to social transition.
"Within #Western societies, despite centuries of suppression, there are still traces of a past when third or fourth or more genders were recognized within many cultures and societies. In rare cases, they presently exist. An example of this would be the #burrnesha of Albania, women who give up their social role as women to live as men. Likewise, within Jewish culture and law, as many as eight genders have been historically recognized, and in diverse ways.

as trans women flock to minnesota, providers are struggling to keep up with demand. waiting lists are months or years long, and many of us worry that our healthcare will be made inaccessible or downright illegal in the coming months.
our soon-to-be co-op for gender affirming care is growing quickly, and could grow even faster with your help! please chip in a few bucks to any of our open collective tiers and/or boost this post to help out trans women who are getting facial hair removal or preparing for bottom surgery!

CW: medical/sexual
Hi, I'm 53 & I struggle with ED & low T. I'm not certain if it's age-related bc I've always felt "under-manly." I make up for it like the protagonist of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Less_(novel) with great kissing. I declare that I'm about to try #GenderAffirming testosterone.
I put this behind a CW bc I think some folk are embarrassed by blunt sharing. Honestly such people probably do not follow me anymore, but... I strive to broaden what's publicly acceptable & sometimes I'm not sure & use a CW.

Got myself a gender-affirming household device today — the BBQ Scrub Daddy!
As can be seen in the product images on the packaging, it is:
- Water Activated!
- Protected by heat-resistant ArmorTec STEEL™!
- Designed for heavy duty scouring
- Exclusive Materials to control my scrubbing power!
- Integrated bottle opener for that cold brewski I definitely have earned now, after cleaning up my own messThere's even a small cut-out in the box where you can touch the sponge and FEEL THE DIFFERENCE before purchase.
Sure, hoping it's a nice scubber for the grill, but man, do they go overboard with assuring me this is a super masculine product for real men. Thinking this is probably a subsidiary of #EagleTactical
(And oh, that "water activated" feature is the fact that if you soak it in water and directly use it on your hot grill, it WILL produce steam. Cool.)

Cool.)
-
Got myself a gender-affirming household device today — the BBQ Scrub Daddy!
As can be seen in the product images on the packaging, it is:
- Water Activated!
- Protected by heat-resistant ArmorTec STEEL™!
- Designed for heavy duty scouring
- Exclusive Materials to control my scrubbing power!

CW: Size difference, gender affirmation and degradation
When a friend told me I could hook up with a twenty foot tall dragon, I laughed at the idea. When I arrived at Azure’s mansion, I stopped laughing. I knew where ringing the doorbell would lead: I’d be tasked with pleasuring him until HE was satisfied with my efforts, or else.
The discussion before our scene was brief. Azure casually reminded me that he could kill me without trying and nobody would dare look for me here. He allowed me to decide which part of his body I’d worship, but that was the last choice I’d make as a person; from that point, I was his to use.
While a gym rat might have found this to be a fair challenge, for me the tasks were overwhelming and obviously impossible. I was trying my best! My best just wasn’t very good by his standards. He respected the effort but he wasn’t shy about mocking the futility of it.
When I paused to catch my breath, Azure layered on another insult. “You’re a pathetic excuse for a man, you soft-dicked WORM.”
I winced at the insult. Somehow, I found the courage to speak. “I– I’m trans,” I confessed to the dragon, the first time I dared to say those words aloud.
Azure paused and looked directly at me. His head dipped respectfully, then rose in an unnervingly slow nod. “A woman might be able to handle me, but YOU? You’re just a squirming little GIRL, aren’t you? Truly pathetic, like a delicate dragonfly begging to be erased.”
Those words, degrading as they were, made me squirm with delight. He was affirming my gender by focusing his ‘abuse’ on it. “Thank you–” I started.
“You have better uses for your tongue, girl,” Azure interrupted. “Get to them.” And so I did, even more happily and eagerly than before.
This might be an unconventional way to take pride in being transfemme, but sometimes being called what you are can be affirming, degrading, and erotic all at the same time. Happy Pride, y’all. 🏳️⚧️

The fucking DAY I get contacted to set up surgery consultation for gender affirming surgery is the same day the U.S. House passed an anti-trans bill that would ban federal Medicaid funds from being used for gender affirming care services. The inhumanity of it all is exactly how fascism works. 🙄😭 #trans #genderaffirming #lgbtq #transgender #medicine #healthcare
