  3. Geminid meteor shower peak tonight, fyi. The moon won't rise until 2AM-ish in the U.S., so it'll be good viewing for a while.

No need to worry if it's cloudy or you can't get out tonight. These things go on for a while. It's supposed to be partly cloudy here for the next two nights, but clear Monday night, so I might wait a bit since I have some photography locations in mind

  11. An international group is organizing an observing campaign through the Citizen Science Working Group of the #LUMIO mission: LUMIO is an ESA space mission to observe lunar #impact flashes (LIFs) from space, on the lunar far side (esa.int/Enabling_Support/Space).

To encourage more ground-based observers to try similar observations, on the lunar near side, we invite you to participate to the "LIF Geminid Campaign (LGC)", monitoring the Moon for LIFs during the peak of the #Geminid meteoroid stream, 13-15 Dec 2025. During the maximum of the stream, the number of visible impact flashes will be higher than during non-shower times, therefore there is a good chance of detecting at least some impact flashes.

Observations can be made using moderately-sized telescopes and a video camera. On the website lif.mi.imati.cnr.it/home_page. there are now a recording of a thorough talk about the project and its slides at lif.mi.imati.cnr.it/open_item_ and slides about the preferred analysis software ALFI at lif.mi.imati.cnr.it/open_item_ -if you want to join in the LGC please sign on by 21 November.

  16. #DidYouKnow: The #Geminid #Meteor shower is one of the most popular meteor showers each year, known for its fast, bright meteors.

It's caused by the object 3200 Phaethon, which is thought to be an Apollo asteroid with a "rock comet" orbit.

When a meteor burns out in the atmosphere, the ionisation sends out a radio signal. One is seen on the pic.
It's a soothing white noise hiss for background with occasional blips.

  20. The #Geminid #meteor shower peaks after midnight in the early morning of December 14th, and they’re usually one of the best meteor showers of the year under good conditions. This year, the nearly full Moon will wash out the fainter meteors on the peak night. Still, the Geminids are known for bright meteors, and it’s common to spot their shooting stars up to a week before the peak.

  22. Only saw one #Geminid last night, but it was a good one. Really bright fireball streaking across the centre of Orion. That'll do.

  23. If you’d like to capture pictures of the #Geminid meteors and have a #GoPro, you can set it up as follows: night lapse, photo mode, 30 second exposure, auto interval, unlimited length, 1600 iso, flat color, 4K white balance. 🤓

If you’ve got some sparse clouds, you might bring the iso down to 800. It will be a little darker and capture a few less stars, but will be less grainy and won’t overexpose the clouds.

    Good luck! ☄️

  29. Not long now till the #Geminid meteor shower, the second-best of the year, which peaks on 13-14 December. The Moon will be just past new, so when the radiant is high in the southeast around midnight, rates of 20-50 per hour are possible – if you have clear skies!

Also in December, the #Ursids (URS) peak on 23rd however the Moon will be waxing gibbous and so don’t expect much more than one or two meteors per hour.
