(The fact that it's Grand National day today is entirely co-incidental. What an unnecessarily cruel race that is!)
It's quite easy to get a half-decent print off a #gelli plate, but to get something really worthwhile requires a depth of expertise I simply don't have. But the process is immense fun. What's not to like about playing with fields of pure colour?

Gel plate printing meets Impressionism tutorial

Recipe for 1200 ml (30*40*1cm) long lasting plate:
Gelatine: 180 g
Water: 600 ml
Glycerin: 300 ml
(Isopropal)Alcohol: 300 ml
And a baking sheet or prep a shadow box frame from a furniture store
...or get a ready made gel print from the art store. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I had to avoid screens for a bit yesterday, and one of my partners helpfully reminded me that #gelplate printing was a fine way to pass the time.
I finally started having some success transferring images, in this case ink brush doodlings on paper made their way to the plate, and then to my paper without it being by accident.

We had some play time with the #gelplate this afternoon.
Not much to show for it beyond a pile of messy paper, and the realization that a few things combine better than I thought they might.
I am really enjoying seeing experiments get messily layered together, and that unlocking new ideas.

More of those toilet paper tube painted flowers. This one was a case of stamping away the paint (which I stamped onto a second plate). I'm definitely going to be making more of these...

Next up for #printerSolstice @printersolstice is CMYK so I got out my process cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink and started experimenting with the gel plate. The first is my favourite, made with cut paper stencils and patterned Japanese tissue paper. I also used some carved Lino blocks and plant materials on the other prints.

I had one of those days where I just couldn't get into my artwork because I was too preoccupied with social media for my own good. 🤣
Late this evening, I finally got myself to work in my sketchbook which inevitably lead me to the gel plate to play with some paint and pull some prints.
This was my favorite of the evening. I just adore the grunge.

Hubble provided the first observational evidence of the existence of SMBHs. Sharp images from Hubble have helped astronomers determine the abundance of SMBHs and their influence on galaxies and how they evolve over time.

One of the things I have noticed about my artistic process over the past few years is I have a tendency to get obsessed with a particular medium for awhile.
Then, seemingly at random, I hit a wall with it and it no longer sparks the joy that it was the day before and I feel like I can't get anything right with it.
This is usually when I know it's time to move on to something else.
However, being a mixed media artist, it's not always abundantly clear what medium I need to be moving on to and getting myself started on something (anything, really) is quite the internal battle.
There's always that feeling of resistance where all of my art supplies feel too precious to use, where all the imposter syndrome feels swirl around too loud, and everything feels a bit pointless.
But yet, I persevere....
Today, I started to collage with some of the gel plate prints I'd been making. Starting quite small, on 5x7 canvas board. I'm pleased so far!

Tried out a new technique on the gel plate today where I used Play-Doh to make an impression of a texture and then used it like a stamp on the plate.
This one was of one of those Mardi Gras bead necklaces.
Seems like a great technique to take impressions of textures that aren't on a flat surface or textures of objects that you don't want to cover in paint.
Super excited to try this out more!

Most of my gel plate experiments so far have felt more like creating abstract papers to be used in elsewhere in collages rather than feeling like a finished piece all on its own... but this one might be!

After binge watching gelli plate print tutorials for two days, I wandered myself to the craft store and bought myself a gelli plate and a brayer and spent the afternoon experimenting with making what will probably be collage papers, but who knows?
I'm looking forward to digging more into the technique, it looks like it has the potential for some really neat effects.
