Building an Analog Geiger Counter

With all this talk of #orphansources at #emfcamp I thought it was time I equipped myself with a #geigercounter courtesy of #footlegrobotics at the #emfcamp2026 #nightmarket I've always wanted a working geiger counter, I have many old dead civil defense ones. So when one was sat in front of me, I could not resist! Please recommend mildly radioactive stuff for me to play with! 👍
-
My geiger counter gives at least for a week or so 0,29 μSv. That used to be around 0,09 μSv.
Should I be worried? 😃 -
Tried printing the case in ABS today so it is more heat proof. As I have seen before, the surface touching the bed came out really pasty white like it had something stuck onto it. I wondered if it was stresses in the plastic from shrinking as it cooked while stuck to the bed, so I tried my hot air solder station wand on it, and it disappeared. See the far end which Inhave treated compared to the near end which is as it came off the printer. #3dprinting #geigercounter

I told you I was radioactive ... and this video is mostly sound.
At the start of this video, I'm about 4 metres and two brick walls away from the geiger counter. After about 3 seconds of background, I walk slowly towards it and the counts pick up. After 12 seconds I put my hand over the meter tube and it goes wild.

Ordered boards arrived. The Geiger detection board appears much better quality than the one I had for my prototype build. So that is good. The display board now has both USB-C and micro USB ports. Nice, but neither of them line up with the hole for the USB lead in my case designed around my original sample ordered a while ago. #GeigerCounter #EMFcamp #NightMarket

I made some case improvements last night so it all goes together better inside. I have also made significant software progress so now the chart has a scale and auto scales to fit the magnitude of the readings. #GeigerCounter
-
Green glowing glass bowl shows the case is not shielding the Geiger Muller tube. #geigercounter

First fully assembled and fully operational unit. I have a list of improvements to make to the case, but everything fits inside and power is routed between the boards. This is reading real data now. #GeigerCounter
-
Case is coming together nicely. Maybe I shouldn’t have prototyped it in red though. Getting some pretty lively readings! #GeigerCounter
-
First completed draft of the case design for the #GeigerCounter is done, and going on the printer to check for fit (and printability).
-
Case design is coming along. I went with complicated but I think it will be worth it. Working on shadowline mating faces now I think I have most of the interior fit done.

Build Your Own Geiger Counter with MightyOhm's kit

@ai6yr What kind of calibration can be done? I TLDR manuals, would want to knowdynamic range, from minimal baseline sensitivity to max usable input.

☢️ Radiation monitoring
Today's reading: 0.26 µSv/hScale:
< 1 µSv/h – don't worry
1–10 µSv/h – OK briefly, not long-term
> 10 µSv/h – take action (limit time)
> 100 µSv/h – genuinely dangerous (leave)
> 1000 µSv/h (= 1 mSv/h) – high risk for longer stayWhat I measure:
– gamma (γ) radiation
– beta (β) particles
– X-ray radiation#RadiationMonitoring #GeigerCounter #NuclearSafety #BackgroundRadiation

Radiační monitoring
Dnešní stav: 0.31 µSv/h
Škála:
< 1 µSv/h - neřeš
1–10 µSv/h - ok krátce, dlouhodobě ne
> 10 µSv/h - už řešit (omezit čas)
> 100 µSv/h - už fakt nebezpečné (odejít)
> 1000 µSv/h (= 1 mSv/h) - vysoké riziko při delším pobytuCo měřím?
– gama (γ) záření
– beta (β) částice
– rentgenové (X-ray) záření#RadiationMonitoring

Voila! Geiger counter drawstring bag! (Wrapped in a plastic bag, because of instructions not to contaminate the tube with radioactive dust... not that I have any here. 🤔) #sewing #geigercounter

LOL I believe the WW2 era radio behind me has a tube with some radioactive components. It clicks almost as much as the smoke detector if I put the detector in the right place. #radioactivity #geigercounter

Geiger Counter Fun
Well, at least, my garage is not extra radioactive 😂 Not at all above background, actually, it seems.
(always wondered that given my random radio gear and parts....)
-
Interesting, so the most radioactive things here at my house (only slightly above background, not terribly radioactive):
1. Granite countertop (this is a known thing)
2. Night lights (apparently, tritium in there to make them glow)
3. Smoke detectors (bit o'radioactivity in there)
4. Rebar in the garden (hmmmmmmmmmmmm... apparently some radioactivity in the stream, this is where it's shown up in massive contamination events in the past, i.e Ciudad Juarez and the radioactive Taiwanese apartments).
5. Maybe (tough to tell) -- some of the newer drywall. Only slightly more active against it, not a lot. What provides far more clicking was standing out in the sun. LOL

Hmm, the most reliable clicky thing in this house is this night light. Are these things radioactive? #geigercounter
