… x11/gnome on FreeBSD in VirtualBox: GNOME Display Manager works only with GNOME Classic – not with GNOME – and a locked screen cannot be unlocked …
<https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=294977#c2>
"This bug will be never fixed!
It requires lots of work (I mean complex) in x11/gnome-session, x11-wm/mutter, x11/gdm and x11/gnome-shell. These 3 ports are interdependant. They communicate each other through D-Bus.
In addition, gnome-session is becoming increasingly dependent of systemd (for start/stop services, applications and even autostart)."
Generally: <https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/1ryuar8/will_gnome_ever_work_on_freebsd_again/> includes a pinned comment from mid-March.

Is there no way to show a script-generated welcome message on gdm/GNOME? 🤔
I had an security idea where the welcome message would be a sha512 hash, created with todays date + time (15 minutes interval) + pre randomly created static salt.
When you are about to login you check the hash against a hash you created on your phone.
If it's the same hash, you know it's your computer and not a honeypot someone put there to get your password. 🔑 -

No progress at all on this #Ubuntu #GDM login failure issue; I can now only use the machine with a PTS console login, then run gnome-session --wayland, and that gives me only basic function, no access to things like User Accounts.
journalctl only gives these two clues, neither of which yields any meaningful Search results (in 2026)
gdm-autologin][]: gkr-pam: no password is available for user
gdm-autologin][]: pam_unix(gdm-autologin:session): session opened for user guest(uid=1005) by guest(uid=0)
gdm-autologin][]: gkr-pam: couldn't unlock the login keyring.
gdm3[841002]: Gdm: GdmDisplay: Session never registered, failingbut console login proves the user has a perfectly good password! GDM3 fails on the auto-login acct, presents the list of users, clicking one lets you enter pw, then bounces back to the acct list screen and any subsequent attempts are shown a non-functional box to enter their pw and a 'back' button that does nothing. 😩

Hey #freebsd people. I have installed FreeBSD 15 on my Dell XPS 9500 which was very easy! However I am having an issue with #gnome the machine boots perfectly fine to #gdm login screen and I can type my password. As soon as I hit enter the machine freezes. I cannot even change to a TTY. Any ideas for how to debug it or what might be the cause? Pretty difficult when I cannot go to TTY
Trying from terminal I could see my home dir was owned by root which was part of the problem but not solved

Today, for the first time since I switched to Linux over 5 years ago, my #archlinux Z16 #thinkpad kept freezing after #gdm authentication. 😲
Apparently, because the status of `/run/user/1000` became corrupt. 🤔
1. TTY login
2. `loginctl terminate-user $USER` (cleanup sessions)
3. `systemctl restart systemd-logind` (recreating the directory)
4. `systemctl reboot`
5. Everything was back to normalTook me an hour to figure out, though. 🫣

Weird #FreeBSD issue on my x260 #laptop - after the latest update (I’m on 14.3-RELEASE-p1) with Gnome 47, #GDM lost the ability to switch over to #Gnome (on #Xorg): the session just hangs. I can switch to a console and stop GDM without issue but can’t get past the login screen. I can login using #lightdm, for some reason, so it doesn’t seem to be a general issue with Gnome…

SDDM, KDE Plasma, root-on-OpenZFS – simple. On Linux.
Yes, I'll install the theme snaps.
Will I install zectl – a ZFS boot environment manager for Linux? Maybe …

Linux Display Managers/ Window Managers:
#Linux #DM #WM #SDDM #LightDM #Mutter #xfwm #xdm #kwin #gdm ....
lolseriously though.
where does Mutter/ Budgie come from? it seems to be independent of the KDE/ Gnome universes.
I dunno. I feel like I see components from this or that, in that or this and it's keeping track. But does it matter.I do know it matters when I'm messing around w/ the old #HDMI out on the #Funai #Magnavox thing from nineteen eighty 'fore.

Ubuntu Fixes Wi-Fi Connection Fail at Login Screen
Ubuntu users frustrated by the inability to connect to a new password-protected Wi-Fi network at the login screen will be pleased to know a fix is rolling out. This particular bug affects users of both Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Ubuntu 24.10. When trying to join a wireless network at the login screen (GDM) which requires a password, the password input prompt never appears and the connection fails. Why does—soon to be ‘did’—connecting to a wifi network at the Ubuntu login screen fail? Canonical software engineer (and the original bug reporter) Bartosz Woronicz explains: "The log-in screen [in Ubuntu] is implemented :sys_more_orange:

Yesterday, I had my first #crash in #bitwigstudio on #linuxaudio in the 5 years I've been using #linux exclusively for #musicproduction. And I think it was a special one. 😜 Because, while the audio playback continued, I was thrown to #gdm login. 🫣
I'm posting this because I thought it was funny. 😜 Because, other than that, my #manjaro #gnome system is #rocksolid. 😎
