  1. Linux systems have their own machine identifier, similar to Microsoft’s GDID.

It’s typically stored in /etc/machine-id and can be read by applications, including for telemetry.

Unlike Windows GDID, Linux machine IDs can be regenerated without reinstalling the OS.

  2. 🤔 In a truly groundbreaking move, #GitHub announces a #feature to delete Microsoft's #GDID, thereby solving a problem nobody knew existed. 😂 This monumental achievement is sure to change the world of #coding forever—just like every other buzzword-laden #update. 🚀

  3. I'm no tech expert, but I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that VPNs (virtual private networks) exist just to mask your location. That's it.

They don't... They can't really do anything to protect your online identity even if they wanted. Any VPN service claiming otherwise is lying to your face.

Personally, I only ever used VPNs to watch Korean dramas that weren't available in Europe. Still, I knew Korean broadcasters were aware of this, which is why they've removed any geo restrictions on their streaming services.

  4. #Windscribe hat ein #deGDID Script entwickelt, um die #GDID-Kennung aus #Windows zu entfernen (die enttarnte eine Scattered Spider-Hacker und wird per Telemetrie bei allem möglichen übertragen).

  5. 《The complaint quotes a Microsoft representative describing the GDID as “a persistent, device-level identifier designed to uniquely identify an installation of a Windows operating system on a device, either a physical device (e.g., a mobile phone or laptop) or virtual machine, across certain Microsoft services and scenarios.”》

《Microsoft only told the public about it once a court forced the issue.》

  6. Come disattivare #GDID, identificatore persistente che crea #Windows 11 e Windows 10 | #IlSoftware.it

"A Global Device ID (GDID) is a permanent, unique digital fingerprint that Microsoft automatically assigns to your computer when you install Windows or sign into a Microsoft account.

Microsoft uses it to manage software licensing and Windows Store apps, but because it links all your online activities on that computer back to a single identity, law enforcement can use it to track a device’s true owner across the internet

It survives Windows updates. It does not survive a clean reinstall, and Microsoft’s footnote in the complaint admits “one Microsoft user could have multiple GDIDs” over the life of a single account."

  8. @helma Note: The #gdid only active when using an ms #windows account. Apparently not if you use a local account. But #microsoft made it difficult to install a local account.

  10. #Infosec has anyone pieced together how Microsoft was able to associate this hacker's #GDID with the websites they visited?

I've been looking around and all the "explanations" I've found seem like overconfident guesses

  11. With the recent news that #Microsoft marks each machine running #Windows with a "global device id" ( #GDID ) that it stores and uses for profiling even before any request is made from law enforcement, I'm again exploring moving my personal PCs to linux. Last night I installed #CachyOS on my #Lenovo #laptop which went smoothly. I'll test out #games tonight. I also deleted the last bit of data I stored in #OneDrive. I've been running #Nextcloud for years now and am confident in my own data integrity/access/backups, etc.

I'll add that I don't think the particular hacker caught by the FBI with the help of Microsoft is justified in his actions. It seems he is justly accused of crimes. But the mechanism of an OS so secretly logging your locations and actions has just become too much.

  12. If you're using #Windows and a #VPN service in order to get some #privacy, you may probably re-think and switch to a modern #Linux instead.

If you need further incentive for that step:

#Microsoft does generate a unique "Global Device ID" #GDID. This is not the bad news as all/most systems do have those (Linux: "man machine-id").

The issue at hand is that Microsoft is transmitting that GDID with many network transmissions of yours and you can't prevent that from happening.

Using that ID, the FBI identified bad guys that were using VPN for their felonies.

While catching really bad guys is always a plus, it also proved that your privacy is ignored while #surveillance is maximized when your activities may always be tracked down to your unique Windows ID.

  14. It's a day of digital autopsies on #SurveillanceCapitalism island. We say goodbye to Sir #SamNeill #JurrasicPark while #Microsoft reveals Windows 11 is essentially surveillance software. An FBI complaint exposed #GDID, a persistent device fingerprint that tracks you across VPNs with no off switch. Buried in enterprise docs, not user consent. The architecture of control is built in plain sight. You're just #TooBusyTo read the registry keys they planted at HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IdentityCRL

  15. Your Apple or Microsoft device has an identifier (or two). The software reports part of what the device is doing. Using a VPN does not protect your from your operating system.

Trackers are placed ahead of due process. Regulations are always late, and insufficient.

The latest trackers are called DSID and GDID. Here is a nice story:
"It’s basically Microsoft self-certifying, promising that the American body overseeing this, the FTC, is independent enough that Europe can trust it."
"The redress side is even worse."

  16. Under ECHR Art. 6 (fair trial, adequate facilities to examine evidence) and the Schrems II judicial-redress critique of US law, that is a structural human rights problem, not just an IT-sec footnote.

The defendant never got to audit the methodology; the requested state never demanded one. #itsec #echr #GDID 4/4
