#PressFreedom / Why did IDF assassinate journalists Hamza Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuraya? 3 different versions within 4 days tried to hide the obvious truth
#IDF doesn't know who they're targeting. They kill and then make up a story about "terrorists". But targeting journalists, clearly marked as such, seem to be a priority. #Israel is also among the top jailers of journalists worldwide, as acknowledged by CPJ recently. https://kolektiva.social/@oatmeal/111806150045046433
Israel gave several shifting explanations for the killing of Hamza Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuraya:
Initial IDF statement was that they were killed while accompanying a "terrorist" who was operating a drone that threatened Israeli forces.
Later, an IDF spokesperson statement was that they were using a drone in a war zone which is problematic, but it is unfortunate they were killed.
Even later, the IDF statement changed again, this time claiming that "intelligence" shows the two were active members of #Hamas and Palestinian #IslamicJihad, who had just operated drones threatening Israeli forces before being targeted.
This tortured interview with #Hasbara operative Eylon Levy leaves no room for doubt. Israel is lying and has been lying to international media about almost everything they agree to comment on in respect to the arbitrary killing of Gazans.

#opinion [Amal Oraby (أمل عرابي)] / 3 Reasons to be Optimistic About the #ICJ preliminary Ruling
1 / by accepting the case and hearing South Africa's arguments that Israel is violating international law, the Court shattered #Netanyahu's project to deny Palestinian nationhood. The Court affirmed there is a Palestinian people with equal rights.
2 / the Court's decision provides legal ammunition for demanding a #ceasefire. This is now not just an unrealistic moral demand but follows international legal norms to minimize suffering.
3 / #Israel is now under increased global scrutiny that exposes the less flattering realities of decades of #occupation and siege policies. Israel will have to reckon with the past, present and future consequences of its actions.
This shifts the calculus for other post-colonial peoples to demand justice for Palestinians as connected to their own struggles. A new political project is needed in Israel to change realities rather than deny them.#SikhaMekomit [Hebrew] https://www.mekomit.co.il/%d7%91%d7%99%d7%aa-%d7%94%d7%93%d7%99%d7%9f-%d7%90%d7%99%d7%a9%d7%a8-%d7%a9%d7%99%d7%a9-%d7%a2%d7%9d-%d7%a4%d7%9c%d7%a1%d7%98%d7%99%d7%a0%d7%99-%d7%95%d7%94%d7%95%d7%90-%d7%96%d7%9b%d7%90%d7%99

10 ministers attended the Bible fascists’ rally.
“Only [population] transfer will bring peace”
“Oslo is dead, long live the people of Israel”
“We need to go back home and control the territory as well as offer a migration option and impose dead penalty for terrorists”
“We gathered here to tell the world the land of Israel is ours … we’re back”
Labor Party Chairwoman MK Merav Michaeli said: "Netanyahu has brought the abhorrent fringes of Kahanism into the mainstream to lead the State of Israel. The incitement that led to Rabin's murder now threatens to destroy the State of Israel."

#opinion / Aluf Benn: The ruling by the International Court of Justice is the biggest victory yet for the BDS movement
[…] As David Ben-Gurion said, Israel's fate depends on two things - its strength and its righteousness. On October 7th it became clear that its strength is far weaker than we believed, and yesterday its righteousness also suffered a terrible blow. The leader, who boasted of his longer tenure than the state's founder, is responsible for both defeats.
[…] The ruling by the International Court of Justice is the biggest victory yet for the #BDS movement, which denies Israel's right to exist. A thousand times more than the repealed UN resolution equating #Zionism with racism; more than protests on US campuses or the boycott performances by Roger Waters and his ilk.
[…] Yesterday (Friday), #Netanyahu suffered another blow from the ruling by the #ICJ in The Hague, which agreed to hear South Africa's lawsuit accusing Israel of committing genocide in the #Gaza Strip. Little consolation can be found in the judges' avoidance of an immediate ceasefire demand. Their decision presents Israel as a clear suspect of #genocide, warning it against tampering with evidence, demanding it report good behavior, and citing by name some of its top officials - President Isaac #Herzog, Defense Minister Yoav #Galant, and former Foreign Minister Eli Cohen - as inciters of genocide. While #Netanyahu is cautious about them in his speeches, not drawn into inflammatory "sword and fire" rhetoric, his overall responsibility is clear to the judges who quote his pledges of a prolonged war.
[…] What an historical irony: Netanyahu, who is considered in #Israel as the leader most reluctant to use force and enter into wars, is now mentioned in the same breath as Vladimir #Putin, Ratko #Mladic, and #Myanmar's rulers. And if South Africa wins the lawsuit, and the court determines that genocide is taking place in a Gaza, Netanyahu will be added to the list of the worst villains.

Gaza Ministry of Health looks like they might be are UNDER reporting war deaths.
Gaza's war death stats look somewhat like Russian #COVID data, which is to say, they look suspicious, but they definitely DON'T look like an over count.
🔗 https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(23)02713-7/fulltext 🔗 the Lancet article this data is from
It zig zags up, looking like real world data, then on about 27 October 2023 it simultaneously drops AND shows possible under-dispersion (a statistical term meaning the number per day is suspiciously consistent). It looks a bit like when #Russia were refusing to report more than 800 COVID deaths per day, but it' isn't quite as severe.
🔗 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9111161/ 🔗 "Underdispersion: A statistical anomaly in reported Covid data" Dmitry Kobak
This is unfortunately unlikely to be a real reduction because, despite reported war deaths in the general population halving, deaths of UN Workers increase.
It is possible the Government of Gaza are deliberately under-reporting deaths, exactly like Russia were during the pandemic. (Realistically if you started - or massively escalated - a war, and
got tens of thousands of people massacred by a much-better-armed enemy, you might not fully admit to how bad things were getting?)But in this case I think it's more likely that deaths per day have exceeded Gaza's capacity to report them. Despite the constant accusations, the numbers Gaza's MOH are releasing are not just an estimate, they are only the named identified dead, they exclude anyone trapped under rubble and possibly those who ended up buried in mass graves (mild "citation needed" but I've heard that from moderately reliable sources and I'll believe it till I see a more reliable source refute it).
But it doesn't just hit a ceiling, something very suddenly goes wrong with their data reporting on 27 October 2023 (+/- 2 days) … I've not yet found what this corresponds to, but it might be around the time the #IDF ground invasion of Gaza began?
