Spirit in Ashes. Hegel, Heidegger, and Man-Made Mass Death [1985]

Edith Wyschogrod's concept of the "death world" is a philosophical and ethical framework she developed to understand the phenomenon of man-made mass death in the modern era.

In her book "Spirit in Ashes: Hegel, Heidegger, and Man-Made Mass Death", she argues that events such as the #Holocaust, the use of nuclear weapons, genocides, famines, and forced deportations are not isolated incidents but part of a single global phenomenon she calls the "death event." This event has radically altered the meaning of self, time, and language in human experience.

Wyschogrod defines the "death world" as a new and unique form of social existence where populations live under conditions simulating death, effectively becoming "the living dead." This includes three main expressions:

1. Wars deploying weapons designed for maximum human destruction,

2. The intentional use of famine, deportation, and dislocation to destroy populations,

3. The creation of death worlds, such as concentration camps, where life is reduced to a state of ongoing death.

[followup] Israeli emigration surged in 2024 as population growth slows

In 2024, Israel experienced a significant increase in emigration, with approximately 83,000 people leaving the country, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics. This contrasts with the roughly 24,000 Israelis who returned from abroad and the 33,000 new immigrants who arrived.

The overall population growth slowed to 1.1%, down from 1.6% in 2023, with a net loss of 18,000 residents due to migration, compared to a gain of 25,000 the previous year.

Despite the negative migration, the population still grew by 112,000 due to a natural increase of 130,000, resulting from 181,000 births and 51,500 deaths.

The population is now just over 10 million, with 76.9% identifying as Jewish or "other," 21% as Arab, and 2.1% as foreigners.

A devastating portrait of Beit Lahiya reveals corpses decomposing in streets, some crushed by Israeli military vehicles, as residents face starvation under complete siege. The city has been subjected to relentless bombardment aimed at forcing Palestinians out, with estimates of 65,000-80,000 people still trapped there. Residents report seeing dogs devouring bodies, wounded people bleeding to death without aid, and survivors drinking unclean water while sheltering in damaged buildings "on the verge of collapsing."

Speaking about the current situation, Ya'alon explicitly described the systematic emptying of northern Gaza's Palestinian population, stating "there is no Beit Lahia, no Beit Hanoun, they're operating in Jabalia, and essentially clearing the area of Arabs."

He emphasized that this is being done to establish Jewish settlements, adding that according to polls, two-thirds of Israeli society supports both a liberal Jewish state and separation from Palestinians. Ya'alon warned that "whoever is trying to confuse us is leading us to nothing less than destruction."
