The government’s gas reservation policy is in the news and the ABC has a story up about how the proposal has ‘Santos-sized loopholes’ in it, according to the Paul Farrow from the Australian Workers Union.
There are no words and not even any emojis that can express how outrageous…and unsurprising this is.
Santos literally said in 2014 that its:
“aim in [east coast gas exports] was always as much about raising the domestic gas price… as it was about the [export] project.”

It speaks volume for how easy it is to con our govt into submission and give up on the idea taxing #GasExports. So, #Elbow is not only working for Japan but China as well… But *don’t you worry ‘bout that* (quoting a famous #Grifting ex-State Premier) the govt is implementing a *domestic gas reserve*, FFS.

Which is doubly laughable, once you learn that China is now on-selling about the same amount of gas (in terms of volume) as it receives from it’s Queensland contracts. Hate to burst your bubble, but even if #AUKUS was somehow *cancelled*, it would absolutely not free up billions for NDIS. The AUKUS money comes out of the Defence budget over a period of 10 years. There is no separate AUKUS money per se, it’s all in the overall defence funding commitment sitting just above 2% of GDP.
The only way to fund NDIS properly is through #TaxReform; increasing tax revenue by cutting out all fossil fuel subsidies and properly taxing #GasExports (like every other country does). There are other #taxChanges that need to be made to recover AUS$ that are making their way overseas taxfree as well (in the billions of $).Australia remains one of the few (might be the only one actually) OECD countries which is over-reliant on wage/salary taxes as revenue.
