I just finished The Etiquette of Freedom by Gary Snyder. It was enjoyable and thought provoking. I don't always agree with Snyder's approach but if I had to pick a western Buddhist tradition I'd take his Redneck Buddhism over the generic "mindfulness" of today's corporate retreats any day. #GarySnyder #buddhism #religion

I was looking up some history about Alan Watts, who was famous for interpreting and popularizing Japanese, Chinese and Indian traditions of Buddhist, Taoist, and Hindu philosophy for a Western audience. In researching him I learned about Druid Heights, a bohemian artist community of sorts north of San Francisco, and that's how I found the video below.

This is an excellent and long article about the last remaining members of the Beat Generation (as of the article's publication in 2017). We overly romanticize the Beats but I still get inspired them, imperfect as they were and probably because of their imperfections.

A 1966 #documentary featuring #PhilipWhalen & #GarySnyder. Each gets some biography focus and then each reads their #poetry.
Both were key members of the #BeatGeneration and both read their poetry at the Six Gallery in #SanFrancisco on October 7, 1955 when Allan Ginsberg first publicly read his seminal #poem Howl. Both, also, had/have strong #PNW & #Oregon ties, and both were #Buddhist, fyi.

Dipping back into Kimmerer, Berger, Snyder and Haraway for a thing I'm writing.
I find it weird when people DON'T see the world as alive, as a subject, not an object.
