I found a baby garter snake to show Ellie when she gets up. My mom used to catch spiders, insects and snakes to show us when we were kids. She once caught a baby copperhead while cleaning her yucca plants. My dad just shook his head.

A snake on the grass!

I'd guess it's a foot long or less. It was a couple of feet off the ground hanging out on the grass and cut-leaf coneflower leaves. A baby garter snake probably. I've seen a several of these this year so there must be a breeding population of them here now.

A garter snake I guess. I'm used to them being more colorful so I was almost thinking it was a Desert Striped Whipsnake but that would be very rare here and the red tongue with black tip is garter snake.

On the rainy side of the state when I was a little kid big enough to pack a bucket around I'd fill the bucket up with garter snakes of all sorts of different colors.

Two snakes, a Garter Snake and a Northern Water Snake, are coiled inside a tree hollow at Moon River Ontario Canada.Not a fan of snakes but I found this cohabitation extremely interesting. Apparently the Garter Snakes are quite social and don't mind sharing their home.

We saw lots of wildlife, but the highlight was spotting this bitty little Plains Garter Snake crossing the hiking path!

It was so tiny that I almost didn't see it at all. I know these guys live around here but have never seen them in the wild until just this year, in which I've now seen two!

Happened upon this photo that I took many years ago, accidentally capturing a combination of elements that I like very much. On that early April day this little Northwestern Garter Snake (Thamnophis ordinoides) had ventured out from dormancy and settled self into a tidy composed coil, camouflaged among last year's fallen leaves not yet decayed, a bit of fresh greenery, and shape-echoing serpentine flower clusters that had newly dropped from the deciduous canopy overhead.

Look closely, you'll see one of my favorite neighbors, a garter snake, it was rustling around on the far end of the porch so I sat quietly and waited and it slipped up onto the pile of bricks and sunned itself. We sat there together for about twenty minutes. If you can't see it, it's widdle nose is to the left of the broken bricks in the middle. #snakes #gartersnake
