  1. I cooked one of the still-green butternut squash tonight, and omg it’s delicious! Tasted similar to summer squash, but better!!

Butternut is cut in bite size and steam-fried with mushrooms, sriracha baked tofu, jalapeño, and other veggies.

The side is the ripe orange bittermelon airFried and seasoned with sweet sauce for unagi (it’s better than unagi, I swear). It’s served chilled.

  3. Harvested some gorgeous hot peppers from the community garden plot yesterday.
So, I’m making a huge pot of chili.

*Ow, my fingertips on my left hand are burning from touching the hot chili peppers*

The vegetables used for this batch of chili are listed in the AltText.

  7. #NewZealand #Aotearoa - #CommunityPantry Locations

"Finding community pantries near me is becoming a priority for many New Zealand families navigating the rising cost of living and seeking to reduce food waste through community-led sharing initiatives. These #PātakaKai (food storehouses) operate on the principle of ‘take what you need, leave what you can,’ providing a vital safety net that fosters #manaakitanga (hospitality and care) within our diverse neighborhoods from Northland to Southland.

The concept of the community pantry has evolved rapidly in Aotearoa. What started as a few informal ‘#SharingSheds’ has grown into a sophisticated national network of Pātaka Kai.

In the current economic climate, #FoodInsecurity affects a broad demographic of New Zealanders. These pantries provide immediate, #BarrierFreeAccess to nutrition without the stigma often associated with traditional #WelfareQueues.

Moreover, these locations are hubs for #sustainability. By redirecting surplus #garden produce and supermarket ‘best-before’ items, they play a critical role in the #CircularEconomy of our local regions.

'The Pātaka Kai movement is more than just food; it is about restoring dignity to our communities and ensuring that no one goes hungry while our land produces so much abundance.' — Community Leader, NZ #FoodSovereignty Project.

    - Reduces local #FoodWaste significantly.
    - Strengthens neighborhood social ties.
    - Provides 24/7 access to emergency food supplies.
    - Encourages the sharing of home-grown organic produce."

  9. I made an egg frittata with the pink oyster #mushrooms I’m growing in buckets. To answer @Broadfork’s question, the mushrooms haven’t covered the bucket yet. So far, they sprout in succession, in alternating holes—which is a good thing because that would be a lot of mushrooms to deal with all at once. I guess you could just dry them.

Anyway, the shrooms, green onions and rosemary came from our garden, which is a nice feeling. Added some smoked olive oil. Very gourmet! #GardenToTable #gardening

  11. Celeriac! This knobby root vegetable has a subtle celery flavor with a starchy, potato-like texture. Roast, mash, or add to soups for a delicious fall dish. #HarvestSeason #Celeriac #GardenToTable
