  1. Flittery critter didn’t want to pose long, but I got some quick snaps. Common Blue butterfly, I think. #butterflies #insects #GardenNews

  9. Last Autumn I had part of the garden cleared of saplings not producing edible fruits and other plants, and topped it up with compost and manure. I asked the beautiful J (my heavy-gardening guy) to also prune the bougainvillea, which was the most beautiful one I've ever seen, but huge and overgrown and impossible to tame. He pruned it down to the trunk, just, say, 12cm or so left 😭😭. I thought I'd lost it.

BUT today's joy - a new shoot coming from the base. I now have hope. It flowers in winter and really lifts my mood to see the brightness in the depths of Winter.

  11. So the Sweet Mace is planted, along with some Lemon Verbena (the other LV plants are a bit old now).

Picked from the garden - beetroot (will have to eat every day now to keep up), spring onions, carrots, nasturtium pods, turnip, parsley, Greek Oregano, Cape Gooseberries.

There will be a great salad in that lot. The nasturtium pods are for pickling when I have gathered enough. (I let the radish pods go too far for pickling - I'll let them seed and should have radishes everywhere.) Cape Gooseberries are being saved for sorbet (I think). Although that could change.

  12. The first few agapanthus buds are forming. I thought the Jacaranda is really late this year but checked my records - it'll be a little late but not extraordinarily so.
