  5. Celebrating the unexpected survival of Salvia guaranitica Black and Blue, which is coming back after having been trampled by a neighbor's escaped hog. Yes, I've got to make sure the fence gets tightened up around the garden!

  6. Good planting weather! One rose bush Archduke Charles, a small pot of Greek oregano, and dwarf agapanthus Peter Pan all went into the ground this morning. Now they are being watered in by the rain. 💙

  7. Its reputation for beautiful winter blooms was one reason I decided to plant the old tea rose Safrano. It's beginning to come along nicely. After all, it was a major florists' variety in the nineteenth century.

  8. I grew this little chap from a seed, and now I can’t remember what it’s called…. Can anyone help #GardeningCommunity #gardening #gardenersofmastodon Anyway, it looked mighty fine this morning in my #welshgarden

  9. Here's a bud from the old tea rose Safrano. With our chilly nights, it's holding on a long time before opening! Lovely colors in both bud and new foliage.

  10. Morning mood for #RoseWednesday (Are we doing rose Wednesday here?) Paradise has a couple of spent blooms and is regrouping through our little spell of near-freezing temperatures.

  11. I shared this pic in my Six on Saturday collage, but I wanted to feature it on its own too. It's a beautifully aging bloom of the rose Paradise. It's holding its softer lilac-pink color well because of our cooler temperatures and the lower November sunlight. Warmer days bring out the cherry red on the petal edges.
    Happy Tuesday, friends!

  12. Poinsettias seem to be very much a love-it-or-hate-it plant amongst gardeners. (I even wondered if I should tuck this pic behind a CW!) I grew up with them growing outdoors so I don't see them as just an artificial bit of holiday decor, rather as one of the more spectacular of the Euphorbias. Wish I could grow them outdoors, but the temperature swings here in the desert are probably too great. Anyway, am enjoying this one indoors for now!

  13. Bloom season for the Sternbergia is more or less over, so it's time for the foliage now, which is handsome and lush, if rather floppy. Still can't believe what a good showing was had from these first-year bulbs. Really looking forward to watching them settle in and multiply as they can naturalize very nicely in a dry-ish soil.

  14. For #SixOnSaturday (clockwise from upper left) the exciting discovery that a few tangerines are ripe, rose Safrano, the final Sternbergia flower for its first blooming season, rose Paradise, narcissus bulbs ready to plant out (though the soil is still a tad too warm), and a good showing from annual vinca (Catharanthus roseus) despite yellow foliage from recent chilly nights. Definitely a celebration of November in the desert #garden! ☺️

  15. @julie3dharris I've noticed mastodon seems very happy with using hashtags, so I think it might be a great way to build the #GardeningCommunity and #GardeningMastodon here. Few if any of those tags were ever exclusive to the birdsite anyway. 😉
