Borsalino (1970), a gorgeous-looking hugely entertaining French gangster film set in the 30s with Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo oozing charisma and sexiness and coolness. Don’t overthink this movie. Just wallow in the style.

Here are 10 things you should know about Edward G. Robinson, born 130 years ago today. He was a much more versatile actor than he is perhaps given credit for today. #OldMovies #FilmNoir #GangsterMovies #ClassicMovies #ClassicHollywood #ClassicBroadway #ClassicTV #PrecodeMovies

The Secret 6 (1931), an MGM pre-code gangster movie with added vigilante justice elements. MGM's gangster movies had a flavour of their own. Fast-paced and very violent, with star-making performances by Jean Harlow and Clark Gable. Good stuff.

The Damned Don’t Cry (1950), a delightfully overheated noir-tinged Joan Crawford melodrama. She becomes a fashion model and naturally winds up as a gangster's moll. A fine movie although Crawford was fifteen years too old for the part.

MGM's The Beast of the City (1932), most hard-edged and violent of all 30s gangster movies. Based on a W. R. Burnett story. Walter Huston is chilling as the obsessed cop. Jean Harlow, unconstrained by the Production Code, sizzles as a bad girl.
