#Ginsberg stands on the stone steps above the #Ganges (in #Varanasi), watching the funeral pyres burn one after another. The air is thick with woodsmoke, sparks drifting upward like fireflies blown by the river wind. He notices how close the mourners stand to the flames, how practical and unceremonial the workers are as they tend the fires, adding logs, turning the bodies. He’s struck by the mingled smell—sweet, oily, acrid—and how it settles on his skin.
He keeps staring at the shape of a body half-revealed through the fire, the curved spine visible, the skull blackening. The workers prod at the pyre with long bamboo poles, coaxing it to burn evenly. A foot slips out of the woodpile and curls as it chars, and he’s transfixed by how familiar and ordinary the body looks even as it’s turning to smoke.
The river moves past, carrying little bits of ash. A dog noses the ground behind him. Someone beside him murmurs a prayer; someone else just watches silently. He realizes the families accept this transformation as simply part of the world, without horror—death turning to light, to heat, to dust.
Ginsberg feels a mixture of wonder and unease, but also a kind of calm. He senses that in this place the boundary between life and death isn’t hidden—it's utterly public, happening all day in the open air. He feels the moment press on him: the fragility of the body, the mundane precision of the fire, and the surreal beauty of the smoke rising over the river.
