De Kushana’s
Een Kushana-prins uit Dalverzintepa (Nationaal Museum, Tasjkent)Het begint dus in China. Of beter, ten noorden van China. Aan het begin van de tweede eeuw v.Chr. woonden daar twee groepen nomaden. In het noordwesten waren dat de Tochaars-sprekende Yuezhi en in het noordoosten de Xiongnu. En verder was er de eeuwige trek waarmee herdersvolken westwaarts reizen, omdat je dan van het betrekkelijk droge Mongolië en Siberië naar steeds groenere gebieden reist – over de Altai, naar de Pontische Steppe, naar de Hongaarse poesta.
En dat wil dus zeggen dat de Xiongnu westwaarts trokken en de Yuezhi voor zich uit dreven. In 176 v.Chr. kwam dit proces door een militair conflict in een stroomversnelling en de Yuezhi migreerden via het huidige Kazachstan naar Sogdië, zeg maar het huidige Oezbekistan, waar ze rond 130 v.Chr. aankwamen. Ook vestigden ze zich in Baktrië, het grensgebied tussen Oezbekistan en Afghanistan, aan weerszijden van de rivier de Oxus. Ze woonden hier te midden van een Sogdisch-Baktrisch-Perzisch-Griekse bevolking en namen het Griekse alfabet over. Opgravingen als het Oezbeekse Khalchayan en het Afghaanse Tillya Tepe documenteren het pluriforme karakter van deze wereld.
De muren van Ayaz KalaDe Kushana’s
Zoals de Xiongnu de Yuezhi voor zich uit hadden gedreven, zo dreven de Yuezhi de Saken voor zich uit, een soort Skythen, die uiteindelijk via Sakastan (Sistan in Afghanistan) naar de Punjab zouden trekken. En langs die route volgden uiteindelijk, na pakweg 30 na Chr., ook de Yuezhi, geleid door een zekere Kujula Kadfises. Hij en zijn opvolgers bouwden een groot rijk op dat zich uitstrekte vanuit Xinjiang via Sogdië en Baktrië naar Gandara, de Punjab en de Gangesvallei. U kunt het zich voorstellen als een grote C rondom Tibet. Dit rijk staat bekend als dat van de Kushana’s en het moge duidelijk zijn dat het, samen met het Parthische Rijk, de verbinding vormde tussen het Romeinse Rijk in het verre westen en Han-China in het verre oosten. Deze handelsweg staat bekend als Zijderoute.
Boeddha (Nationaal Museum, Tasjkent)In het Kushana-rijk zou het zogeheten Mahayana-boeddhisme alle ruimte krijgen, zoals gedocumenteerd in Oezbeekse sites als Dalverzintepa, Zurmala, Kara Tepe en Fayaz Tepe, en in Pakistan in de kloosters van Mohra Moradu en Jaulian bij Taxila. Een heel vroege aanwijzing is dat het Chinese geschiedenisboek Hou Hanshu vermeldt dat een door de Yuezhi afgevaardigde diplomaat in 2 v.Chr. in de Chinese hoofdstad Chang’an les gaf over het boeddhisme. Dit bewijst dat althans een deel van de Yuezhi op dat moment al was overgegaan tot dit geloof. Toen Kujula Kadfises richting Punjab trok, trok hij geen onbekende wereld binnen, want er waren dus al religieuze contacten met India.
Kushana-munt (Bode-Museum, Berlijn)Overigens tonen de Kushana-munten een veelvoud aan Iraanse, Indische en Griekse goden. Het zou verkeerd zijn te denken dat de Kushana’s alleen maar boeddhisten waren. Niet alleen omdat antieke overheden zelden zoiets als één staatsgodsdienst hadden, maar ook omdat mensen normaal gesproken een “dubbel geloof” hadden, wat eigenlijk gewoon wil zeggen dat je meedoet aan de gebeden in het huis waar je toevallig bent. Dat kan de ene keer boeddhistisch zijn en de volgende keer iets hindoeïstisch of Baktrisch en de derde keer iets Grieks of jaïnistisch of zoroastriaans.
Een stupa bij Mohra MoraduLate Oudheid
Zolang in het westen de Parthen heersten, hadden de Kushana’s geen noemenswaardige vijanden, maar na 224 kwamen in Iran de Sassaniden aan de macht. Al ten tijde van Ardašir I (r.224-242) waren er conflicten en rond 260 ging Sogdië voor de Kushana’s verloren. Niet veel later liepen de Sassaniden ook Baktrië en Gandara onder de voet. (Bij de plundering van Peshawar namen ze de bedelnap van Boeddha mee, die dus nog ergens in Iran moet zijn.)
Ivoor uit Begram (Musée Guimet, Parijs)De noordelijke gebieden vielen in handen groepen die we gemakshalve zullen aanduiden als “Hunnen” en mogelijk verwant zijn met de Xiongnu waarmee ik dit blogje begon. Ook die migreerden naar het westen en het was dus te verwachten dat ze ooit in de gebieden zouden komen waar ze ooit de Yuezhi naartoe hadden gedreven. De rest van het Kushana-rijk (dus de Punjab, de Indusvallei en de Gangesvallei) bleven als staat nog ongeveer een eeuw overeind, tot de Hunnen noordelijk India binnenvielen.
Fayaz TepeDe onvermijdelijke Kushana’s
De Kushana’s zijn onvermijdelijk voor wie zich met de Oudheid bezighoudt. Zoals gezegd vormen ze een cruciale schakel in het enorme Euraziatische systeem. Zij waren wat centraal was in Centraal-Eurazië. Wie reist in Oezbekistan of Pakistan komt ze steeds weer tegen, en vermoedelijk geldt dat ook voor Afghanistan en Xinjiang.
Atlanten uit het Tapa-i-kafariha-kloosterIk zelf werd voor het eerst geconfronteerd met de Kushana-architectuur bij mijn bezoek aan Taxila-Sirsukh, waar we de enorme (door hennep overgroeide) stadsmuren zagen van een gigantische vierkante stad. We waren moe van de vlucht van Londen naar Islamabad en hadden de andere delen van Taxila al gezien. Het was al laat in de middag – en we hebben het verder maar even gelaten zoals het was. Achteraf heb ik daarvan toch wel spijt. Ik zal niet snel weer in de Punjab zijn, vrees ik, en hoewel de wereld nog zo veel wonderen voor me in petto heeft, vind ik dat ergens toch ook wel weer jammer.
