Not gonna lie, it kinda irritates me how much talk there is about indie games journalism now that ex corporate types are running stuff like Aftermath, while existing indie journalists like myself kinda get ignored.
There has always been great work done by independents in this field, they’re just the bloggers and YouTubers the community completely ignores.

The video game website Polygon was founded in 2012 by Vox Media and while it still exists, it's vastly changed as a result of being sold to Valnet a couple of weeks ago, with the majority of staff being laid off. @aftermath.site's @nathangrayson.bsky.social spoke to former staff, some of whom had been there since the beginning, about why their time at the site meant so much to them. "Sometimes it’s tough to work in something fun like games, because when the world crumbles around you, it all starts to feel a little meaningless," said Ryan Gilliam, former guides producer. "But — stupid as it sounds — I always tried to tell myself that, with our guides, we were helping people enjoy their hobby a little more, and make their game time a little more relaxing. I wasn’t making a difference in my 9 to 5, but in my head, there were people who were making a difference who would come home and try to relax for a few hours before getting back out there. And in those moments of relaxation, they’d pull up a Polygon guide for 'Persona 5' classroom answers, or a walkthrough on how to get the latest 'Destiny' Exotic. I don’t know if that ever happened, but the thought always made me smile."

I just can't trust any outlet that just doesn't care. And it seems like none of thrm do, which means I have no reason to trust any of them. You know, after looking at the recent #Pokemon leaks and seeing the status of video game journalism right now, it’s become really clear why YouTubers have taken over.
And it’s because there’s no value in most #gamesjournalism anymore. These stories add nothing to the conversation, and are basically hours/days old Twitter recaps.
They’re not timely with coverage, don’t add anything interesting to the conversation and have little reason to exist.

Still, I feel there are "What NOT to do!" lessons in WoW TWW. I think it's a great example of what to avoid. If you go from inclusivity in one c9ntent patch, to sexism, racism, and queerphobia in the next? You're doing something wrong.

[P] I'm just trying to figure out the WHY of this, why Blizzard threw LGBTQIA+ people under the bus, even going so far as banning us and supporting fucking Nazis, after Dragonflight was pro-LGBTQIA+. Is it the new Russian anti-queer law? Blizzard does have servers in Russia. So is it an attempt to keep WoW "Russia-friendly" so that they don't lose that audience? I mean, I know it has to be a greed thing, but I know little of money trails.

[P] It's not hard to find threads with people talking about how Blizzard doesn't ban Neo-Nazis, how they go unpunished, but anyone sincerely asking about the shift from Dragonflight to The War Within can get a six month ban or more! After Dragonflight was so inclusive, HOW did this happen?? It's a really shameless bait & switch to hook in LGBTQIA÷ players and then say "Nah, this is Far-rightville now. Population: Not you."

[P] I don't know how I'm supposed to trust the games media when it only asks questions if it's convenient to do so, it only targets devs already reviled. Why not ask Microsoft why banning LGBTQIA+ people for pointing out how queerphobic TWW is is happening on their watch? It feels like Acticision was more inclusive with Dragonflight BEFORE Microsoft bought them. This is worthy of investigation because why the overnight shift to bigotry?

[P] You might naively fhink they opted to show no relationships in TWW. Ha, no. They thrust straight relationships in the player's face at every opportunity! Not only do Turalyon and Alleria get huge chunks of the story's focus as a straight couple, but also loads of characters mention their straight partners too. There. Is. Not. One. Gay couple in TWW. Why is no one asking Blizzard awkward questions about why that is?

I mean, princess tulanji didn't need white people to save Zandalar in Battle for Azeroth, so why must the not-exactly-white-coded (to put it lightly) nerubians need white people to save them from extinction in TWW? We went from having non-binary heroes, disabled characters in empowered roles, and even gay couples that wrren't meant for the male-gaze to... well, TWW's "For the straight, white, regular lads!" mindset. Even Xal'atath's foot fetish shit (in SO MANY cutscenes) is just objectifying her for the male gaze. It's the modern equivalent of the chainmail bikini, it's gross. Why the backslide?

[P] It's just typical that the media has these glow8ng reviews of TWW without anyone touching on the strong vibes of sexism, racism, and queerphobia that game has. An irrational woman needing a cool-headed male handler to not go emotionally genocidal, white saviour BS out the wazoo, pushing straight hard while having ZERO queer (LGBTQIA+) characters (after Dragonflight was so inclusive). [P] I trusted Mean Machines back in the day—more than any modern review factory—because they had multiple persons giving their opinion in every review. I want that in order to foster trust again. And I want discloaure: every single paid trip related to that game, every item of swag, every visit from a PR person, whether the reviewer has friends at that publisher (manipulation vectors), and so on. Do that and I'll trust, otherwise I have no reason to.

[P] And hearing about the shady goings-on at Second Wind Group just confirms my suspicions. We KNOW, for a fact, that it's easy to manipulate neuronormatives via dopamine—exclusivity and shininess gets reciprocated with 9/10s. And there's no oversight. There's no ethics code and board looking out for that kind of corruption. It's like food supplements, there's no regulation, so you don't have any sense of the credibility of that which you imbibe.

[P] There's no accountability. Is it a good game, or are they intentionally overlooking bigotries and bugs because they think the soulless PR guy is fheir friend? Paying for them to fly out first-class to see an event? That creates bias. Giving them an exclusive tour of their dev HQ and making them feel special? That creates bias. Giving them a bag of exclusive, rare swag that sells for a pretty penny? That creates bias. Bias and 9/10s.

[P] I fucking hate GamerGate, mostly for the sexism but also for making it so that we can't fucking talk about this. It's given games journalists a safe apace to be lazily corrupt. If a game is slammed, is it becauae it's bad, or because a publisher hasn't given the journo their sack of sweet, sweet dopamine pills? How much does egotism and narcissism come into it? "This game wasn't made for me, so I'll trash it." There's no way to know.

[P] Another issue is that these sites only point out problematic bigotries when it's safest to do so, they pick a gake that doesn't have a lot of induatry support as their sacrificial lamb. If social media is writhing over a game having outright bigotry, though? It's often ignored. Frankly, if it was Ubisoft doing it, I think it'd take Hitler featured in aridly antisemetic, queerphobic content before it'd be deigned as safe enough to lambast.
