Nintendo's patent for summoning characters in games has been rejected by the USPTO. This is because the idea is similar to older game mechanics.

The 'Nesting Continuity Protocol' is my answer to the "one-hit-kill" problem. You might shatter the outer porcelain shell, but a smaller, swifter unit emerges from the wreckage. It changes the scale of the fight instantly.
Designer Challenge: How do your players react when the "corpse" of their enemy stands back up, half the size and twice as fast?

"Emotion Echo" is a way of making the Calamivox a mirror to the party’s state. If the players are panicked, the unit gains bonuses to its "Uncanny Mimicry" and fear-based attacks. If the players remain calm, the unit may become erratic or desperate. It turns the players’ own dice-roll failures into its mechanical fuel.
*Question: Do you prefer monsters that react to player stats or player behavior?*

@BitterlyIndifferent i Lived literally inside a European server of Ultima Online (Drachenfeds) and loved the harsh penaltyes for character deaths and the karma system was very nice.
i talked about all this in reddit a year ago, great and diverse comments about those harsh mechanics

#Miniatures and #maps are great for some #games but roleplaying is best when it's #TheaterOfTheMind. Also helpful, though a challenge to GM, is the Player Isolation Principle, whereby the players are not exposed to the #GameMechanics directly. The numerical values have #descriptive equivalents that allow translation. A #strength
#attribute #modifier of +2 becomes "very strong", a 30% reduction in #HitPoints becomes a "moderate injury", etc... -

No. 7493117 involves #collision and #pathfinding, and seems to be mostly related to trainer battles and entering battle by throwing one Pokemon at another. It's not clear to me how this is novel or unique enough for a lawsuit.
No. 7528390 involves player characters mounting creatures and riding them around. As Pokemon is far from the only, first, or even a game with this mechanic for more than a few years, I don't see how they can claim this.
No. 7545191 is the #PokeBall thing, which #PalBalls are very similar to, so much I was surprised they did that at the game's release (#Bugsnax at least used a non-spherical trap), but again, I'm not sure how this is unique or innovative enough for a lawsuit.

I love colorful #dice as much as anyone, and I usually try to find interesting #GameMechanics to utilize them. But I do enjoy #AmberDiceless role-playing , by #Wujcik , based on #Zelazny and the #ChroniclesOfAmber , and am considering a #Foundry game once a month or so.

Looking to create a successful and memorable game? Focus on creating a unique game mechanic that sets your game apart from others in the genre. Whether it's a new take on a classic game mechanic or something entirely new and innovative, your game mechanic should be the driving force behind your game design. A unique game mechanic can help your game catch the attention of potential players.
Remember, this is a tip not a rule!

#Nintendo's propensity to #lawsuits raises a question: should we still think of them as a "fun and friendly" toy company? Clearly, they've been less innovative in recent years, and eager to crush potential competition with #legal action. We have to wonder how much these companies are stifling #innovation within the #gaming industry by rushing out new #GameMechanics, filing a #patent or #trademark, then sitting on these already built systems and making repeated reskins of the last game, if anything, while threatening anyone who makes anything too popular with similar mechanics.
We need to reconsider #PatentLaw, and we need to reconsider Nintendo's reputation as a game company as opposed to a lawfirm.

Good day, #TTRPG community!
Progress clocks were rightly popularized by #BladesInTheDark, but I know this is a mechanic I had seen codified elsewhere before, somewhere. My neurospicy mind being what it is, I am drawing an absolute blank, though.
What is the earliest use of a #ProgressClock mechanic you can recall?

What mechanisms does #Paranoia use to effectively create its environment and invoke the feelings it does? I find it is a likely candidate for #horror #ttgamedesign #boardgamedesign #gamedesign #ttrpg mechanics that bring out some of elements I'm talking about about in theme and #gamemechanics.

#News out of #Nintendo's #patent #lawsuit against #PocketPair, alleging the #GameMechanics of #Palworld are too similar to #Pokemon.
We now know the main #patents, all filed in #Japan earlier this year after PalWorld's release...
