Ich chatte mit unserem Gamelanlehrer übers Lernen. Er hat mir eine Audiosequenz geschickt, wie er selbst auf Java unterrichtet wird.
Das geht dort durch orale Weitergabe. Tonfolgen werden zuerst gesprochen und nachgesprochen. Dann erst gespielt. Sie lagern sich als Melodie und Rhythmus im Körpergedächtnis ab. Danach folgt das Spiel und die Speicherung im Bewegungsgedächtnis.

Die Gamelanecke. Drei Trommeln verschiedener Größe, ein Metallophon mit messingfarbenen Platten und zugehörigem Hämmerchen, ein kleiner Wollteppich und ein flaches Sitzkissen, umherliegende Notenblätter.
Seit letzten Mittwoch eine intensive Probe, ein Auftritt und zwölf Stunden Trommelunterricht.
Unterricht bedeutet in diesem Fall nicht nur Noten und Schlagtechnik, sondern auch Eintauchen in eine ganz andere Musikphilosophie. Das erweitert meine Sicht auf Welt und Menschen.

Und nächste Woche Donnerstag könnt ihr zuhören. Ab 18:30 Uhr im Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum.
Für Menschen, die in Köln wohnen, ist Kölntag, also freier Eintritt. -

Lord Roy Hattersley, the former Deputy Leader of the Labour party. He was born and brought up in Sheffield. In his book A Yorkshire Boyhood, he confessed to being passionate about three things: Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, Yorkshire County Cricket and socialist politics. His friend and colleague, Lord Kinnock, pays tribute.
Daphne Hamilton-Fairley, spoke out for tolerance after her husband was killed by an IRA bomb. He had inspired her to become a speech therapist and after his death she set up one of the first specialist schools for dyslexia and other special educational needs. She named it Fairley House, after her husband. Her daughter Diana Hamilton-Fairley shares her memories.
Roger Cook was the intrepid investigative journalist who pioneered the technique known as “doorstepping” - challenging those he suspected of wrongdoing face to face with the camera or tape recorder running. First on Radio 4’s consumer affairs programme Checkpoint and then on ITV’s The Cook Report he took on criminals and fraudsters on behalf of listeners and viewers. Matthew talks to his colleague Tim Tate.
Sterling Betancourt was a pioneer of steel pan music from Trinidad and Tobago. He was one of the first to bring the instrument to Britain in the 1950s and went on to play a big role in the early days of the Notting Hill Carnival. Sterling’s wife Beatrice Elokbi tells his story.

Tukung: Ein großes, längeres Stück. (Das Foto vom Post drüber habe ich bei dieser Probe gemacht.)
Unser Gamelanmeister sagt nicht, das war falsch, das war schlecht. Er sagt so schöne Sätze wie: Ihr zeigt den Instrumenten euren Respekt, wenn ihr alles aus ihnen herausholt. Seid nicht scheu.

Lou Harrison - music for gitar and percussion, USA 1990.
Il fait partie des compositeurices qui ont intégrés des conceptions extra-occidentales de la musique à leurs compositions (Raga indien, Gamelan javanais...). Comme Cage, il cherchait à se débarrasser d'un moi expressif trop encombrant. C'est une musique dépouillée où la forme rituelle est souvent présente. Un de mes compositeur préféré.

As someone with a tendency to play too fast at gamelan I've started thinking about a conceptual piece called something like Boy Racer where the different players have to try and play the piece as quickly as possible, with the winner being whoever finishes first, provided they played all their notes.

Obwohl oder vielleicht gerade weil dieses Foto technisch sehr unperfekt ist, ist es eines meiner Lieblingsfotos zum #Gamelan
Die Hauptrolle spielt beim Gamelan das Instrument, auch wenn es sehr bekannte Spieler*innen und Lehrer*innen gibt.
Der Spieler neigt sich konzentriert der Trommel zu. Die Hand ist kurz davor, auf dem Fell aufzutreffen. Die Finger sind zusammengelegt und bilden mit der Handfläche eine kleine Mulde. Gleich erklingt ein dumpfes Geräusch.
