Have been sleeping most of the day, so getting back to sleep tonight might be a problem. At least I have things to listen to and a game to grind

#gameDad stuff: Pico-8 and TIC-80 and EasyRPG and Portmaster are all running on my handheld. Bitsybox runs through Portmaster, but only windowed — I need to get fullscreen working somehow. By running it natively, I suppose, but there's no clear guide on how, AFAICT. I'd also like to run Lutro/Löve, but my firmware doesn't support it yet. Emulators for pygame and ChaiLove would be nice, too.
-
I put Portmaster on my #gameDad so I could play bitsy games, but I've since realized that I can use it to play a bunch of Windows games that I got in Itch and Humble bundles, so now I'm waaay down the rabbit hole.

With #FireEmblemAwakening and #OcarinaOfTime becoming two big heavy hitters in my gaming schedule, the pick up and okay nature of #DonkeyKong for the #GameBoy has been an absolute joy in between bigger sessions.

Printed a little charging dock for my Anbernic RG35XXSP, pretty neat. Also has a micro-HDMI to HDMI adapter built-in, in case I ever feel masochistic enough to try using it as a console. #3dprinting #anbernic #retro #gamedad https://www.printables.com/model/1412822-anbernic-rg35xxsp-dock-usb-c-hdmi/

Yay! New #GameDad plays LttP (obviously). It also plays N64 games seemingly without flaw or slowdown. Reports that it plays Wind Waker acceptably seem to be categorically false, however. It also, unsurprisingly, doesn’t play either of the PS2 Tenchu titles.
(It’s a Mangmi Air X, and I haven’t updated it at all since getting it, just tossed a few ROMs I have lying around onto it) -
Best argument so far (though still not what I would call compelling): it should be his because he’s the one who had the idea (first to publicly express it, anyhow) to get another #GameDad. It’s not like he’s not going to get to play it even if I insist that it’s mine strenuously—I’m a dad, the concept of private property owned by me alone is just not really a thing.
-
Mangmi Air X #GameDad arrived, it's real! Customary picture of it playing LttP to follow.

New #GameDad is reportedly States-side now. I mean, I have to wait like a week to use it after it gets here for reasons, but it’s getting closer!

Ordered a new #GameDad. Countdown to the other one turning up starts… now.

Playing old ff7 in between sessions of new ff7
I've talked about the Game Dad in this thread but I don't think I've mentioned what it actually is. It's one of these, a little handheld emulation console, this particular #gameDad is an Anbernic RG353V, it's like a hundred bucks and it's bloody hard to grumble about. I made a shite little website about them at https://gamedad.club.

I've enjoyed a lot of Metal Gear but I returned to my playthrough of #MetroidFusion and just defeated the water snake boss that goes fast and gave me the Speed Boost!

I recently discovered the #GameDad site, and it really resonates with me. I've been playing a Game Boy of late, but also have a GameDad, and really like the concept of no obligation, filling time on your terms, and turn-off-ability.

I'm about to buy some more #gamedad handhelds with the intent of printing them with custom shells, loading up my custom firmware, and sticking some games on them.
I have to decide which gamedad I want.
I'm tempted to go with any of the SP options, but the 34xxSP was hovering around 80 bucks last time I looked, and I'd really love to be sub 40. (although even the venerable anbernic rg35XX is currently 50 most places)
The SP models are the easiest to do custom shells for, though, because I can do it without disassembling them.
I've seen a new entrant in the SP formfactor from Daxceirf. I've never heard of Daxceirf. It still isn't as cheap as the regular 35XX, but it's cheaper than anbernic's SP.
I also really like the Rg Cube (which isn't a cube), but I'm not convinced it's my best option, as it is also fairly significantly more expensive than the classic anbernic.
I don't need thumbsticks. I'm shipping gameboy color games, and possibly some other contemporary systems (snes, nes, etc.) if I can clear distribution rights for the games.
The 35XX is probably the best price to performance, but doing a custom shell for it means full disassembly, masking off the screen, dealing with two ribbon cables, and handling a bunch of loose buttons. It's not a huge undertaking to do once, but it's a lot to do a dozen times in a day.
(on the other hand, it is very pretty.)
Do you have an opinion?

Well it's never a bad time for another run of #MetroidFusion just because

Alternately, if you've released a game that will run on any of the #Gamedad style devices, but especially the Anbernic RG35XX series, and you'd like to do physical distribution of that game, also reach out.
I've come up with what I think is pretty cute packaging for that kind of thing, which I will probably finish and show off sometime this month.
That means NES, SNES, Playstation, Dreamcast, etc are all on the table.
I'll talk more about that in a few days when I post the finished art.

It was way too much work to make, but I really love my custom #gameDad

A thing that the #gameDad encouraged: lots of young people* very new to emulation who are now freaking out because the currently good ROM site is going down at the end of the month
the site in question came online in October 2022
ROM sites going offline is normal but this time there's an Unusual Amount of youngsters who don't know that it's normal because this is their First Time Ever and it's traumatic for them and, IDK, I kinda want to give them a hug and tell them it's all gonna be okay
* imagine "young people" said in a voice from a dusty skeleton crypt

I don't know if it'll run on my #gamedad, because I can't find my card reader again.
But I spent some time playing Barren Planet from @cyningstan today, and it's really nice and has CGA graphics that are shockingly good.

I have for several years intended to sit down at watch Raumpatrouille – Die phantastischen Abenteuer des Raumschiffes Orion, the West German "star trek" style science fiction television program from 1966.
It aired for seven episodes.
You can find them with hard subs here: https://archive.org/details/raumpatrouille-orion-ep-03
or soft subs in multiple languages here: https://archive.org/details/space-patrol-raumpatrouille-orion-1966/Raumpatrouille+Orion+%5B1966%5D+1+-+Angriff+aus+dem+All.mkv
In either cause, they appear to be be pretty good DVD rips.
I have been fiddling with a #gameDad, and it should play movies pretty well, so I'm going to slop those over to an SD Card and watch them on my Game Dad instead of engaging with thanksgiving.

What We’re Playing: October 2025
It's been a couple of years, I believe since we reported on what we're currently playing. This doesn't fill in any blanks for the time since we last reported, but maybe it'll be a useful snapshot for the current moment. Maybe we'll return to doing these, maybe once a month?rodneylives (John Harris): I've been pl
