  1. Okay fedi, I need help using my 8bitdo Ultimate C wired gaming controller on my desktop.

I recall doing some fiddling a few years ago and I got it to work with Mint. I don't remember what I did. A month ago I tried using it again on Debian and it didn't work. I have now switched to Void, where it also doesn't work.

Google and DDG results are dominated by discussion of connecting wireless controllers over Bluetooth. Many of them say things like "as a fallback, you can plug your controller in through a USB port and it will work automatically." Except...it doesn't work. My controller is wired only (I don't think it supports bluetooth at all).

So, let's start with the first test. If I plug my controller into my phone, running stock Android, it works automatically with no configuration required. I tested it with the Android version of
@[email protected] . So I know the controller itself is not broken.

    According to the
official instruction manual, when plugging it in to a Raspberry Pi, you must hold 'B' until the controller's light turns on and stays on (not blinking). I do this when plugging it in to my computer. Here's what lsusb shows.

    lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:082d Logitech, Inc. HD Pro Webcam C920
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 04d9:1702 Holtek Semiconductor, Inc. Keyboard LKS02
    Bus 004 Device 003: ID 2357:0120 TP-Link Archer T2U PLUS [RTL8821AU]
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub

So my computer is able to find the controller. However, it doesn't work, even on games I know it previously worked on when I was on Mint (such as SuperTux).

In Plasma's system settings, the "game controllers" tab says
    No game controllers found
Steam likewise does not recognize that I have a controller plugged in.

    8bitdo's website promotes a firmware
"upgrade tool." I will start by saying I highly doubt it would help me, because
my controller ran with my system several years ago without any firmware updates.

Despite my skepticism, I gave it a try anyway. The firmware updater is only for Windows and MacOS, so I tried to run the Windows version in Wine, and I was unsuccessful. I don't know anything about configuring Wine, so I have no idea if there's a way to make it work.

I also looked to see if 8bitdo makes a firmware updater Android app. They do...but only for wireless controllers.

So what can I do to get my controller working on my desktop?

    The steps are
    1) Install
    steam-udev-rules
    2) Reboot
    3) When plugging the controller in, hold "X"
instead of "B" (this is directly contrary to what the instruction manual says).

Thank you everyone who chimed in!

  4. I just finished replaying Half-Life. Even though it's an old FPS, i still enjoyed the level design and all the details that made navigating the facility eventful and fun.
Since i wanted to play it on the couch, i used the Darkwalker Shotpad. It's a fitting controller for old PC games, when i don't want to sit at the desk.
I'm looking forward to trying the new Steam Controller, hopefully it'll be easier to hold. 😁

  6. I've seen people wondering how close the orange #8bitdo Pro 3 and #RetroFighters BattlerGC/BladeGC are compared to original spiced orange GameCube controller? Well here is my pumpkin patch for comparison.
