  12. @timnitGebru

Techno-trandscendentalism #TESCREAL is spreading like wildfire in influential tech-affine circuits, and also in the so-called #MeaningMaking and #GameB communities.

It is an ideology that is dangerous and deluded.

  13. With so many of us working from home (or at least not in an office), why haven't we found a better way to describe our kind of work than "Office work"?

    Screen worker feels off. Suggestions?

  14. If you'd have told me I'd be explaining #distributed #systems this frequently -- and to people who'd never heard the term weeks ago, let alone seek out a primer -- I'd never have believed you. Yet here we are. Thanks, #Mastodon Perhaps I should bring the basics here so more people can explain & we each up our game.

  15. back on that #agalmia thing.

At this point, the original paper by Robert Levin has found its way onto different lesser-known wikis, pertaining to subjects like open-source and #gameB, but the idea hasn’t evolved much. I’m talking to myself about it because, as a meme, it’s completely stale and stagnant.

And yet, it has merit. No one gives me answers to the questions it has led me to ask; most don’t even know where to begin with the questions. That’s not their fault; it’s no one’s fault really. No one talks about what Economics misses, or what it perhaps took responsibility for that didn’t belong within its purview of selfish incentive. Economics is terrible at defining the human actions of families, for example; and while nothing in a family at any given time is transfinite, the family itself IS transfinite and positive sum so long as the family cooperates and reaches replacement-levels of reproduction. Economics has to model this in the way it models corporations or governments; I suspect, though, if we took the time to analyze the understood economic costs of a family and abstract that cost over time, we could then free up the mental bandwidth necessary to start looking into the positive-sum magic that comes from a family reaching those cost goals and doing more than just sustaining.

Generations of families are iterations of success models; that success is not only passed on but taught to the following generation, which will inevitably rebel and apply the same wisdom in very different ways.

These are agalmic actors, and they are investing their scarce but managed resources (economics) to maintain the transfinite, self-serving yet positive-sum abstraction (the agalmia), and create something bigger than oneself; not much different than the programmers that contribute of their time and experience to improve a piece of software, because the code is available to both improve upon, and learn from. The stakes, in the case of the family, are just much higher.

Economics can explain the resources required, but it can’t explain the human actions which required those resources. This is a problem that, to me, seems to have many fascinating implications were it to be addressed effectively.
