  4. Sorry, no diesel

I walked past Blarney Autos this morning and clocked the "SORRY NO DIESEL" sign on a car blocking the diesel pumps there. The fuel protests have been rumbling on around the country for days now, refineries are ringed by placards, and the knock-on is landing on forecourts like this one. It doesn't help that roughly two-thirds of what we pay at the pump is tax of one flavour or another, and the war in Iran has shoved the wholesale price of oil the wrong way. I sympathise but don't support […]

  6. Golden Hour at The Roundy

Late afternoon sun hit Castle Street at just the right angle and turned the whole scene outside The Roundy into something cinematic. The outside area of the pub was packed with people drinking and enjoying the afternoon and soaking up the kind of Cork sunshine you never quite trust to last.

The lens flare flooding in from the right was almost too much, but I leaned into it rather than fighting it. Sometimes the technically “wrong” choice is the one that captures the actual feel of a moment and this one felt like the first real evening of spring.

  7. Let the Good Times Flow (Eventually)

If you’ve been anywhere near Grand Parade in Cork lately, you’ll know the scene: hoarding, fencing, traffic cones, and that slightly bewildered look on everyone’s face as they try to work out which footpath is still open this week.

This is what it looked like 2 weeks ago when a sewerage pipe was laid across Nano Nagle Bridge to Sullivan’s Quay.

I found out that Uisce Éireann is working in the area:

Uisce Éireann is commencing works in the Grand Parade area of the city to make improvements to Cork City’s wastewater infrastructure.

The works will allow access for specialist contractors to the underground Pump Station located on Grand Parade, for removal of redundant equipment, cleaning of the pumping station and removal of historical debris. It will afford further opportunities to survey and inspect the existing structure and
will provide resilience for the continuation of critical wastewater infrastructure improvements within Cork City.

Works are due to commence in January 2026.

The section of works will take place on a short section of Sullivans Quay, across Nano Nagle Bridge and along Grand Parade.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd. and are expected to be completed by mid-March 2026.

In February 2007 the Grand Parade was a construction site too. That was when the wide pavements were laid, along with the makeover of St. Patrick Street too.

  15. Trans+ Pride London 2025

An estimated 100,000 people joined the Trans+ Pride event yesterday in London as they marched from near BBC Broadcasting House, past Downing Street, and on to Westminster Palace to Parliament Square Gardens. It was spectacular & emotional to watch.

“The message was clear: we will not be erased. Our existence is natural, historic, and enduring. You can try to take away our rights, but you will never remove us from society. We are a part of humanity, and the public will not stand by while harm is done to our community.”

Lewis G Burton, one of the founding members of London Trans+ Pride

  16. One UI 7 on the S23U: Fix the notification pull down

I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S23Ultra a few days ago to One UI 7, or Android 15 and it has mostly been a good upgrade, but it hasn’t been perfect.

The first and most annoying, change was to the notifications when you pull down on the screen. There’s no sign of the quick settings anywhere. It turns out you have to pull down from the top right. This comment on Reddit explains how to fix it by:

    • Tapping the pencil icon.
    • Going into panel settings.
    • Change it from Separate to Together.

The other annoyance is the three rows at the end of the quick settings panel.

    • Play music / Media output
    • Nearby devices / SmartThings
    • Smart View / Modes

You can sort the order they appear in, but you can’t remove them. I never use them. Annoying.

The camera is fine. The UI has been changed a little. I haven’t noticed any change in picture quality yet.

I’m glad the apps drawer in the default launcher can now be scrolled vertically again. That is a feature of almost all third-party launchers, and “Home Up” used to enable it, but One UI 6 removed it years ago.

I had to delete my phone from my car’s Android Auto interface to get it to connect reliably again. I should say “reliably” with quotes because Škoda cars seem to have problems with this phone (or at least the 2020 Kamiq does), and I had to buy an Android Auto dongle to make it work. Thankfully, the new version of Android seems to work ok with the dongle.

The “do not disturb” Meeting widget is now two spaces big for no reason,

I like the UI refresh, the rounded corners are nice.

  18. Plaid Hat Diplomacy in Valencia

A hand raised in greeting, with a smiling face, or is it a hand raised in anger?

Luckily, it was the former, with the smiling face of a friendly man just out of the shot greeting his friend in the plaid hat.

  19. The Bustling Streets of Valencia

If you don’t like crowds, you should avoid Valencia during the Fallas festival. I rarely saw any trouble. The crowds were almost always in good mood or, at the very least, resigned to not moving very fast. It appears that moving fast can be accomplished if you hire someone in a high-vis vest who will barge through the crowd, dragging a well-dressed family behind them to the front of the crowd. I saw that once as I waited for the Mascletà one bright sunny day last week.

  22. DMode at Cyprus Avenue

DMode, Depeche Mode Experience, is a Depeche Mode tribute band. They played in Cyprus Avenue on Saturday night. As expected, most of the audience was a bit older, around my own age, or older. Well, Depeche Mode have been around for a while!

I learned that I really don’t know anything but Depeche Mode’s major hits. The rest of the audience were fans and sang along and had a blast. If you love Depeche Mode, you’ll love DMode!
