Since the first time I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion back in late 1990s, I thought it had philosophical backgrounds. And it was the reason why I started reading so many books.
And now I find an Hideaki Anno interview from a manga magazine saying he made it just for fun: "they looked so cool"

in honor of Studio Gainax (creator of Evangelion, FLCL, many others) finally shuttering last month, these are the Daicon shorts they made for fan conventions in 1981 and 1983 as college students
if you've never seen them, it's a pretty important piece of anime/nerd history as well as being a sign of nerd culture in the 1980s. yes, fan conventions would make music videos for fun, and use all kinds of copyrighted stuff without permission
the first 90 seconds of the video from 1981 is rough; the second longer video from 1983, you can see why they went on to become professionals. and, of course, ELO!

Hopefully the various IP (Gunbuster, Diebuster, FLCL, TTGL, etc) can be clawed back and all ends up with the original creators and rightful owners.
