  1. We did a site visit to the new house in Innisfil to plan our furniture placement and determine what we need to purge. My wife has a list of improvements that are "mandatory," so I guess it's a smaller, less expensive moneypit.
We also toured the area and stopped at a park right on the lake where we ran into this large group of fluffy goslings. I tried to get closer but the parents were giving me not so subtle warnings.

  2. "Vancouver school staff and anyone else with links to the files could read everything. Firewalls or passwords didn’t protect the documents, and student names were not redacted, which cybersecurity experts warned was a massive security risk.

The monitoring tools often helped counselors reach out to students who might have otherwise struggled in silence. But the Vancouver case is a stark reminder of surveillance technology’s unintended consequences in American schools.

In some cases, the technology has outed LGBTQ+ children and eroded trust between students and school staff, while failing to keep schools completely safe.

Gaggle Safety Management, the company that developed the software that tracks Vancouver schools students’ online activity, believes not monitoring children is like letting them loose on “a digital playground without fences or recess monitors,” CEO and founder Jeff Patterson said.

Roughly 1,500 school districts nationwide use Gaggle’s software to track the online activity of approximately 6 million students. It’s one of many companies, like GoGuardian and Securly, that promise to keep kids safe through AI-assisted web surveillance."

  4. Student Tools Should Not Flag + Keywords

One of the more dangerous features of monitoring tools like , , and Bark is their “flagging” functionality.

  5. Local parents and other friends! Did you know that Durham Public Schools is using spyware to monitor our childrens' activities? This is really bad news and hasn't had much public discussion.

Below is a (modified) letter that a friend of mine sent to the School Board in case you would like to learn more and speak out yourself. You can contact the Board of Education directly by emailing [email protected].

    Hi Durham Public Schools board,

I have a middle school student in Durham Public Schools and am concerned about Gaggle. While I appreciate the effort to increase safety at school, I don’t think that Gaggle is an appropriate solution.

    1) Gaggle uses poorly paid, poorly trained monitors to review flagged content. I don't want someone outside of DPS reading my child's email, Google Docs, or looking at images on their Google Drive. I’m concerned about reports that Gaggle’s school monitors have terrible working conditions (source: fastcompany.com/90748240/gaggl).

    2) There’s evidence that Gaggle surveillance is both invasive and ineffective. One student reported that kids were recently pulled out of class because they had mentioned death in a creative writing assignment. This seems like a poor use of already strapped administrator time. Her experience is in line with reports from Minneapolis Public Schools (source: the74million.org/article/gaggl).

    3) I’m concerned about the long-term effects of having kids in a surveillance system. I don’t like the idea that kids should expect to be watched at all times and have no expectation of privacy. We don’t know the long-term implications yet of these systems on kids’ mental health (source: buzzfeednews.com/article/carol).

Thank you for your time and all that you do for Durham students.

  6. Why is #Gaggle monitoring students’ activity online? If anyone is monitoring the internet activity of children, it should be their parents, and their parents only.

Also, why the heck is #LGBTQ language any part of the criteria originally? That’s confusing to me.

Oh, while we are at it: A group of geese on the ground is called a #gaggle; when in flight, they are called a #skein, a #team, or a #wedge; when flying close together, they are called a #plump. Here they had a short layover with lunch break at #HydePark, #London.
