Overview Located in the southeastern portion of the State of Nebraska is Gage County, which uses the City of Beatrice as the county seat. The county is located along Routes 77 and 136, as well as N-8 to the south, N-112 to the southwest, and N-4 in the vicinity. At the northern end of the county are N-41, N-43, and N-34B. "While doing research on the USGS stream gaging program for a local presentation, [he] found this beautiful image of a classic stilling well from the Kentucky archives. Intakes and valve stems in perfect condition, hand pump and flush tank ready to fill, no kerosene or funky well water smell, and the clock weights on the Stevens recorder have plenty of travel room. Makes them] think of the good old days climbing down well ladders to “muck out” wells. Many of these “tanks” of instrument shelters still exist with either working intakes or as converted bubble gages. Many others have been decommissioned due to safety issues (falling or confined space hazards). Thanks to the men of the #CCC and #WPA..."

A retired USGS hydrographer gifted me this clock, from an A-35 Freig Graphic Recorder he told me.
Vintage / historic instrumentation like this is such a – literally - solid reminder of the history of stream gauges and their measurements by the USGS across the USA, from the 1st measurement on the Rio Grande in 1889
It is a pleasure and indeed an honour to now have it on my office desk.
EDIT: Chelsea Clock tells me is a "water monitoring movements [they] made back in the [20s and] 30’s for customers like Stevens Water Monitoring in Oregon"
