I'm reading 'Motherfoclóir Dispatches from a not so dead language' by Darach Ó Séaghda & just found out that the Irish charmingly referred to World War II as "the Emergency"
Tá 'Motherfoclóir Seolta ó theanga nach bhfuil chomh marbh' le Darach Ó Séaghda á léamh agam & fuair mé amach gur thagair na hÉireannaigh go fonnmhar don Dara Cogadh Domhanda mar "an Éigeandáil"

Dia duit! Any Irish ☘️ language learners on here?
I’m starting learning on Duolingo🦉and looking for ways to improve on that - but I don’t live in Ireland 🇮🇪, so in-person courses are probably out.
I’ve done some searches so have ideas, but recommendations would be great.
I’m happy with books, videos, apps and video chat, paid or free.

@alistaircoleman I keep seeing #Gaelic speakers here on Mastodon. Probably happened upon one in numerous years on Twitter, but I barely go a day without seeing someone with #Gaelige somewhere in their bio.

Ah it’s hard being in the states sometimes… about the time I’m thinking of going to bed, all the lovely #Mastadaoine are waking up and sharing their thoughts 😄
Downsides of having a foot in two worlds, I suppose.
It’s worth it to learn more culture and embrace community, though.I feel like since we’re planning to take the plunge and move anyway, the least I can do is start putting down some digital roots and working on my #gaelige 🙂

The word for clover (Trifolium) in both Scots Gaelic and Irish is seamair.
In both languages shamrock is considered to be a small or young clover. So, in Irish it is:
seamair + óg = seamrógThe English word shamrock is an approximate pronunciation of seamróg.
In Scots Gaelic the word for young is òg (the doofer goes the other way 😃 ).
