> Maya Linstrum Newman, HTFL Programme Lead, and Daisy May Carty Cowling, HTFL Programme Officer, will present findings from two recently published GAATW regional reports, which they co-authored.
> The webinar will examine why people trafficked for forced criminality continue to be punished despite existing legal protections, and how gender, migration status, ethnicity and other structural inequalities shape who is recognised as a victim of trafficking and who is treated as an offender. They will also share some initial findings on the similarities identified based on the consultations with our members in Latin America and the Caribbean.
> At the end, participants will be invited to discuss around a central question: what would it take to move from punishment to effective, gender-sensitive protection in practice?

We still know pretty little about human trafficking in practice, other than that the usual approach is a terrible way to handle it and often harms victims further even when it “works”.
Forced criminality is one of the forms that most easily get sidelined when talking about trafficking (even when not conflating it arbitrarily with sex work), despite being the third major purpose of trafficking globally [GLOTIP 2024], having devastating impacts on both physical and mental health (as most trafficking does, to be fair), and the particularly delicate position the victims find themselves at (due to the system being designed to punish their direct actions, despite the coercion involved in carrying them through).
Their combination is then… in some need of work, to say the least. ;3
This one is another must-hear. 💞
