As a professor, I see this every day and it's got me flummoxed. The debate around AI in education is stuck on a really unhelpful question: "Is it cheating?" Yes, it is. However, this article attempts to move past that. The real question is, "What are we actually trying to teach?"
If an assignment can be completed entirely by a large language model, is the assignment obsolete? The article argues that we should be focused on teaching students how to use these powerful tools for critical analysis, synthesis, and creative problem solving. Trying to build a better plagiarism detector is an arms race we will lose. We should be building better assignments instead.
