#Futhark
#programming language:• Escaped in 2017 from University of Copenhagen #DIKU, the #CS research group founded by Naur himself
• A member of Milner ML family of functional languages
• Pure functional—like Miranda, Haskell, Elm, etc.—without objects, obviously
• Far more sensible functor (module) syntax than SML and OCaml
• Far cleaner appearance than SML's half-century-old syntax
• Automatic exploitation of GPU-borne parallelism via CUDA or OpenCLAs a life-long fan of Milner's ML, Futhark is a far more comfortable couch upon which to lounge, for me, than the current crop of popular languages that pander to #AI, like R, Python, Julia, Mojo, etc.
💕 Futhark 💕
— modernity without mania
— performance without penance
— maturity without mouldiness
— pedigree without pomposityhttps://futhark-lang.org/index.html

#DigiArchMaintainathon motivated me to finally write a blog post about the integration of #futhark code into #rstats packages. I've done this last year for my ggpointgrid package and wanted to document the workflow since then.
Link: https://nevrome.de/blog/posts/2026-01-12-futhark-in-ggpointgrid.html
This is a bit nerdy, admittedly, but maybe still interesting for people that come to R from a #functionalprogramming background. At least I myself will need this again eventually, so I'm glad that the #maintainathon gave me the push.

🚀 Futhark: the #programming language that promises simplicity and delivers a semantic dumpster fire! 🙃 First-year students were reportedly seen running for the hills as the "straightforward" parallel programming concept spiraled into chaos. 😂 Who knew 'easy' could be so complex?

Mr 10 has been doing a great job of DM'ing our family D&D game. Last session I noticed the Player's Handbook had some art with runes in it! And they don't look like garbage!! I can already read the first two words!
Finally! A chance to show the kids that learning the writing of our ancestors has real-world use!
After the session wraps up I begin transliteration, eager to tell the story of this epic image, and inspire a love of futhorc in my family. I'm literally trembling with excitement.
"What does it say, father?"
The first line reads:
THIS IS PHOTOSHOP'S VERSION OF LOREM IPSUM

I finally managed to fulfill my dream of using #futhark-lang (https://futhark-lang.org) in an #rstats package. v1.4.0 of my ggpointgrid package (https://github.com/nevrome/ggpointgrid) uses a futhark implementation of the core arrangement algorithm, transpiled to C and then called and compiled via Rcpp. (1/n)

Never ran into the term “Futhark” before in my life, but working on the next edition of “The Web Development Glossary,” it turns out it’s relevant for our wider field in at least two ways:
1. As a JavaScript engine in Opera until version 10.50.
2. As a programming language particularly well-suited for parallelization.
(If stuff like this interests you, follow @webglossary for terms of the day!)

The author has excellent taste in projects; here's a GPT-2 implementation in #Futhark: https://github.com/BobMcDear/llaf

Runes and why English should be written in khuzdul, or real-world futhorc.
An interesting take on the Norse writing system.

#Runes found in Canadian wilderness baffle #archaeologists
Tucked away in a forest approximately 465 miles NW of Ottawa, a massive slab of bedrock features a hand-etched rendition of the full Lord’s Prayer. But the religious text isn’t inscribed in French or English—it’s composed of over 250 symbols from the oldest known runic alphabet, the #Futhark alphabetic runes. First developed and used by Germanic peoples between the 2nd and 8th centuries CE.

Are there any site/library about runes e. g. Old Futhark ones, or any other, with both images, letters correspondence, and meaning, without so called "New Age" stuff (e. g. without manifestation, "feminine intuition", "banishing negative energies") and so on? And of course without fascism/nazi "sauce"?
Regarding historical sources of runes and their meanings I hope the book "Rudiments of runelore" by Stephen Pollington will help me

All 28 videos for my Patreon course on the #Younger #Futhark, Powering Up the #Viking #Runes, are now up on YouTube.
It's a video diary (edited for conciseness of course!) of a #magical #retirement I undertook in 2020, one day for each rune, resulting in my writing a #rune-poem. Lots of reflections on the Younger row and on the processes of magical knowledge.
It's free to my Patrons, Patreon link below. At the moment, that's the only way I'm releasing it.My Patreon is at: https://www.patreon.com/c/Chaotopia

I published a whole bunch of pages about varangian runestones I’ve visited on the Varangian Biker site. Each page includes photos, a trace of the inscription and a translation. A few of them also have descriptions. I have visited more of them, but I haven’t had time to create pages for them yet.

A productive afternoon/evening in the #8bit world. Switched from coding natively on the #mega65 to setting up a cross platform development environment for #basic.
Then back to creating more #medieval #runes as a character set. Half way done but I need to revisit some. It's hard to make them accurate with blocks and few options for multiple diagonal lines.
Been rather fun writing hexadecimal letters in runes.
