So, my brain was bouncing around #FusedGlass stuff this evening, and I found myself looking at glass rods and saw this beautiful Seaweed Aventurine Tint rod and thought, damn I love that, I don't recall ever seeing it in a sheet though, cause I would totally buy some of that.

Because they don't make it. It's only in the rods.

Good results for both processes! I now have more parts for future projects. I'm ready to do the test in the studio kiln when the owner is back next week.

At the end of a very busy day, here's this morning's kiln project. It's a two-part effort. Another attempt to properly fire the stringers, plus an attempt to flip and polish some blue puddles. The high temp was lowered another 10F degrees for the stringer test. But ... was it high enough to reverse three puddles and to cure the chemical (white and hazy) that shines them all up. The answer tomorrow.

The newly created puddles. Top and bottom are shown, somewhat cleaned. Sometimes the bottom is prettier than the top. Each one has to be checked. If the bottom side is better, like the one at the top center of the photo, that puddle will be fired again to change the shape.

In a private discussion, I was asked about blue puddles. It turns out there are none in my completed bins, but only in the pending puddle drawer. Well let's fix that! Results will be later tonight or tomorrow.

Puddles are easy, relatively fast and a great way to use scrap glass. I love the random nature of the results. The hardest part is breaking the slabs. Even with heavy-duty running pliers, it is hard.

A quick tour of the photos. Scrap glass in blues and some white was stacked up for the first firing, which was back in 2022 (eye roll). It flattened into a chunky slab (bottom view). Breaking the slab open today revealed the thin stripes of color. Breaking out chunks and setting them on edge sets up the next firing that will create the puddles. Fragments of glass from the breaks will become little colorful dots to be used in future work.

Sadly, Jackson did not do well. But the 15F degree difference between my jewelry kiln and the studio kiln is supported.

Let me introduce you to Jackson. He was a suncatcher that I made for a dear friend. He decided that he was tired of hanging out in the hot Phoenix summer, so he made a break for it. Friend returned him in pieces, but he could not be put together again.

Today I want to compare my jewelry kiln preferred top temperature to the studio kiln. Glass pusher never tops 1475F for a full fuse, where I need to go higher in mine. I wanted just a fast project from scrap glass to fire at 1475F to see the result. That should help me figure out more easily the fiddly temperature for the big project being fired at the studio.

Looking through my scraps, I found Jackson languishing in the yellow bin. So for this test I laid pieces of Jackson over pieces of iridized vanilla.

Sadly, the rainbow did not turn out well. The red is too dark, the yellow is too brown and the lavender is too light. But all the parts will get used someday. The sheet was still overcooked with a 10F decrease from the prior test. The instructor did say that getting the right temperature is fiddly. Onward!

Resulting parts cut from the test sheet. Even though it was a test, some may become jewelry at a future date. The sparkling green aventurine was disappointing. It was much smaller than the rest and the instructor did recommend against using it. So of course I had to at least include it in the test run. 😂

Another stringer part sheet went into the kiln today for a test fire. The last one was about trying some unusual types of stringer and it was a bit overcooked. Today I chose colors more deliberately. The attempt at pride colors may fail. I pulled from a mixed tube the colors that looked to be the best choices. The test today is to try a lower temperature and get a better firing.

#FusedGlass friends - when it comes to stainless steel drape molds, can you use anything that's stainless steel or are there other considerations I need to take into account?

A certain thickness or weight or something else I'm not thinking of?

Picked up last week's work and it all came out great. Plaid votive is so pretty, phase 1 of the dot votive looks great, and I am very happy with the frit stretch and I'm glad I went with the plain slump mold, it's really nice all smooth.

Also measured a drape mold in the class, it might work for what I have in mind next semester, but I'm still gonna be on the lookout for something closer.

It's Saturday and day two of glass class. The kiln has been unearthed from where it was banished and is running for the first time in 6 weeks with a test firing. Hubby is home to entertain the cat, so it should be a safer day for cat and glass both.

@cafechatnoir This is the class I'm taking. The instructor says he thinks it's the most challenging of the Bullseye classes. It really is fiddly work to make it accurate. He says not perfect, but accurate. Splitting hairs?
Melody did manage to unplug my work light, but thank goodness did not jump on the table. That could be a glue or stringer disaster!

Good morning. It's a busy Friday. My glass webinar (both today and tomorrow) is going to be 4.5 hours of fun and frustration. With my craft space in the midst of renovation, I have to watch and work on temporary tables. And then there's the challenge of keeping the cat away from the glass. Wish me luck!

I knew I would find something fun to do with my dots! This is going to get a tack fuse so the dots will still be all raised up, and then slumped into a votive candle holder.

Found a mold! Went with a plain one, not waves or ruffles. It's not a nice bit of depth to it, so I think it will look nice.

@cafechatnoir Filing the doc away and noticed this one. If you don't have it, you may want it. There was a time period when green was not being made. So this is how to layer some colors to create different greens.

Last color test of the week is more ribbons - I have a variety tube of ribbons, which is perfect for getting colors checked before ordering a whole tube of one color.

The colors, left to right, are:
Black
Red
Yellow
White
Cyan blue transparent
Aventurine green
Deep royal purple transparent

I'm very interested to see what the yellow does - I've had yellow frit go brown on me before.

I'd love to be able to do a black/yellow bumblebee/clueless plaid if the yellow cooperates.

Also doing a color test on this lemon-lime green - it's not technically a streaky, but it sure looks a bit like it to me. We'll see what next week brings on this one.

Oh, the Easter egg colors came out SO pretty!! Both will be great on their own or together. (I've already got a votive candle holder in the works for this combo.)

OK, this is the 2MM clear + ribbons + 2MM clear, and I really like how it came out - happy to have a way to full fuse ribbons without dog bones.

The frit stretch came out so nicely! I love how delicate all the colors are. And it filled in all the way, yay!

I ground off a few spiky bits around teh edges and it's going back through again to get everything smooth and even before slumping.

Keeping up with the inventory is the hardest part! I reinventoried molds recently and identified more than a dozen that I had not cataloged in my database. Frit inventory was much better -- more an issue of volume than color. I don't catalog glass, but do take photos of COE 96 Fuser's Reserve. That needs to be redone soon.
