There are many aspects of Johnson's government's response to covid that deserve very harsh criticism, but I don't think I want to come down on them too harshly for this one.
They had to get these schemes in place *quickly* and without too much bureaucracy.
Yes, if they'd taken a few months longer to get things set up or made the process more bureaucratic, then I'm sure there would have been less fraud.
But at what cost?

A White House draft memo is threatening NO #backpay for #furloughed workers. But that would have no effect on #Trump & members of #Congress.
The #Constitution forbids a reduction in #salary for the sitting president, thus guaranteeing compensation regardless of a #shutdown, acc/to the Congressional Research Service.
Similarly, members of #Congress are not subject to #furlough & the Constitution states that members of Congress “shall receive” compensation for their services.

The shutdown will mean sick patients hoping to access experimental therapies at a renowned Maryland hospital known as the “house of hope” will not be able to enrol, except in special circumstances.
The National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center in Bethesda – the world’s largest hospital dedicated to clinical research – will continue to provide care for currently enrolled patients.

WA Governor Bob Ferguson has been putting forth policies more inline with Trump's white house than what you'd expect from a Democrat.

Whilst I agree that #Brexit is in part to blame for the dire state of affairs we have in the UK at present, what about the legacy of #COVID (e.g. the need to recoup what was dloed out in #furlough payments to prevent millions losing their jobs), and the effect of the war in #Ukraine ?
Both #COVID and #Ukraine are not the fault of the #Tories, but with hindsight are, in a round about way, the long-term implications of investing abroad over many years whilst #British manufacturing goes to pot.
