On the basis of a leaked draft, @politico-europe-POLITICOEurope is reporting that the @EUCommission will propose ‘welfare standards’ for fur farmed animals, rather than introduce a ban.
This decision completely flies in the face of #animalwelfare science and public opinion. Remember that 1.5 million citizens signed the #FurFreeEurope #ECI demanding a ban on fur farming.

The European Parliament held a public hearing on the 10th successful European Citizens’ Initiative, Fur Free Europe, on 12 October.
Organisers presented their argument that ‘the keeping and killing of animals solely for the purpose of fur production is ethically unacceptable’ and members of the European Parliament presented their views on this initiative.
A debate on this ECI in a plenary session of the European Parliament took place on 19 October. The Commission will issue its official reply by 14 December 2023.

The Finnish #FurIndustry circumvents the #EU sanctions against #Russia.
Because of the #sanctions, it is forbidden to export #fur _products_ to Russia, so the industry here has started to export the skins.
The export of mink skins has even grown after the #war started.
The article from #Animalia, an animal rights organization, is sadly only in Finnish

Sadly production is due to resume in Denmark this year after suspension due to Covid, but only a handful of the original 1000+ mink producers want to restart their cruel business.
