Exactly one week ago today, I wrote to each of my national and European Parliament representatives, making the point (among others) that these proposals by the Irish government to amend the GDPR are in flagrant breach of the EU's Charter of Fundamental Rights.
Not a single one has replied.

Terms such as "digital privacy" and "digital rights" have been vexing me lately. I think those terms imply that our rights originate from and exist only within a digital space - they do not! And they are certainly not meant to follow the rules of those who create digital spaces.
The technologies may be digital, but our fundamental rights are certainly not!

Der Bundestag hat ein Gesetz verabschiedet, das es ermöglichen soll, automatisierte Videoüberwachung an öffentlichen Plätzen auszuwerten (z. B. in Bahnhöfen).
Dabei sollen Menschen identifiziert und sogar Verhalten bewertet werden können.- Erst versucht man auf EU-Ebene die Chatkontrolle wiederzubeleben.
- Dann soll das Informationsfreiheitsgesetz beschnitten werden.
- Und jetzt wird die Bevölkerung zunehmend unter Generalverdacht gestellt.Es ist erschütternd, wie Schritt für Schritt der Aufbau eines Überwachungsstaats vorangetrieben wird.
Ja, Strafverfolgungsbehörden sollen ihre Arbeit machen können.
Aber: Jede Maßnahme muss sich daran messen lassen, ob sie wirksam ist – und vor allem, ob sie im fairen Abwägungsprozess gegen Grundrechte standhält. ⚖️Wenn wir Überwachung allumfassend normalisieren, steigt auch das Risiko des Missbrauchs.

The German Bundestag has passed a law that is intended to make it possible to analyze automated video surveillance in public places (e.g., in train stations).It should allow people to be identified and even their behavior assessed.
- First, they try to revive the EU “Chat Control.”
- Then they want to curtail the Freedom of Information Act.
- And now the public is increasingly put under a general suspicion.It’s appalling how, step by step, the construction of a surveillance state is being pushed forward.
Yes, law-enforcement authorities should be able to do their work.
But: every measure has to be judged by whether it’s effective and above all whether it stands up in a fair balancing process against fundamental rights. ⚖️If we normalize all-encompassing surveillance, the risk of abuse also increases.
Especially then, when a government comes to power that doesn’t take the constitution as seriously. -
As a #CSA #Survivor, I have spent my afternoon collecting the contact details of 836 EU officials (Parliamentarians, Permanent Representatives and their staff) and sending all of them a plea not to vote for the urgency procedure this week designed to circumvent legislative oversight - on a law Parliament already rejected.

"Today (Wednesday 24 June) the European Commission announced a new reform proposal for Europol – the EU’s policing agency – expanding Europol’s operational powers and weakening key data protection safeguards to the tune of €3 billion.
This is the 3rd Europol reform in six years changing Europol’s mandate to increase its powers and budget. This puts the European Commission increasingly at odds with the boundaries set in the EU treaties, which provide only for Europol to remain in a supportive role to Member States’ police authorities and competent solely for serious forms of criminality.
The Commission’s proposal claims that “interference with the rights to privacy and protection of personal data… remains both necessary and proportionate,” however under the proposed changes, anyone could have their personal data stored and processed by this obscure EU police cooperation agency.
Despite acknowledging the most recent Europol reform in 2022 already massively expanded the agency’s mandate, the proposal charges ahead with significant deregulatory measures to further weaken data protection laws and expand operational powers:"
