Venezuela is reeling today.
Two back-to-back earthquakes, magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, struck central Venezuela on Wednesday evening. They are the strongest to hit the country in over a century.
At least 164 people have been killed. Nearly a thousand injured. Some 11,000 reported missing. Entire neighborhoods in Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira have collapsed. Families are still buried under rubble as rescue teams work through the night.
The quakes hit during a national holiday. People were out with their families. The timing could not have been crueler.
International rescue teams are on their way, but the need is immense. Hospitals are overwhelmed. The airport is damaged. Thousands are homeless currently.
