  1. Australia used to refine most of its own fuel. About twenty years ago we had eight refineries, now we are down to just two.
The plants in Geelong run by Viva Energy and in Brisbane at Lytton run by Ampol together supply only a small slice of what we use. Around 80 to 90 percent of our fuel now comes from overseas, mainly Asia.
After last night’s fire at Geelong, petrol production has taken a hit — and it is a timely reminder of how exposed we are, especially with tensions rising in the Middle East.

  2. ENERGY & TRADE TIES SHORED UP AMID GEOPOLITICAL CURRENTS

  3. US Gulf Tensions Threaten Australia's Fuel Security

With Donald Trump's comments on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz sparking concerns, Australians are now faced with a pressing question: what does a potential US security guarantee gap mean for the country's fuel security and everyday life? As fuel prices continue to weigh on minds, the nation is holding its breath, wondering how bad things could get.

  5. When Australia shut down refineries, what did politicians think would happen?
In 2014 to 2015 two major refineries stopped refining fuel

    • Kurnell Refinery → converted to an import terminal
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurnell_

    • Bulwer Island Refinery → closed and turned into an import terminal
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulwer_I

Result: Australia became far more dependent on imported fuel while regional industries still rely on diesel to function.

    Farmers feel it first
    If diesel prices spike
    • tractors do not run
    • crops do not get harvested
    • food supply chains strain

Fuel security is not abstract policy.
It affects farmers, freight, food prices and regional Australia.

But according to parts of the press this is somehow #Albo’s fault in 2026.
Apparently decisions made a decade ago only become a problem once Labor is in government.
    Funny how that works.

  7. Australia's lack of fuel security

    "Our way of life
depends upon cheaper oil and fuel coming from overseas, but it does so at the cost of our security and resilience...The thought of not having food in cupboards and fridges or prescription medicines would likely exercise people's minds a lot more than the ill-informed thoughts they had during COVID about toilet paper." >>

  8. Extreme heat is fast becoming a threat to global fuel security, disrupting oil refineries and boosting electricity demand. This results from the warming climate caused by human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. The impact of extreme heat on fuel markets is worsened by low stockpiles and under-investment in the refining sector.
