Australia used to refine most of its own fuel. About twenty years ago we had eight refineries, now we are down to just two.
The plants in Geelong run by Viva Energy and in Brisbane at Lytton run by Ampol together supply only a small slice of what we use. Around 80 to 90 percent of our fuel now comes from overseas, mainly Asia.
