  1. #EV stuff about the #Budget
(Holds up hand. EV owner here.)
Sorry. It feels reasonable in principle that #FuelDuty (a good earner for HMT) gets a complement.
The consultation that opened today is maybe most dodgy in pinning the rationale of a per-mileage tax to #WearAndTear on UK roads.
So, for most of us, let's just sit back and watch what happens about EU mileage for EV owners. #NorthernIreland

  2. My UK Gov petition is finally live!

Raise fuel duty in line with inflation to raise income for critical services

It's crazy that public transport costs have rocketed in recent years, yet the government has sought "popularity" by suppressing motoring costs. Excessive driving is bad for the planet and creates miserable cities. The government is also desperate for revenue so raising fuel duty will kill two birds with one stone. #fuelduty #environment #revenue

  3. Does #NigelFarage stand for #workersrights? Improved #sickpay? Cutting #fuelduty? No he does not. He voted against these measures. Farage will not vote for working people - he will vote against them.

  4. “Rail passengers in England and Wales face steep fares rise from Sunday. Campaigners say if government can find money to freeze fuel duty for motorists they can do similar for railways.” Don’t be silly. We have private rail companies who need profits and a motor industry and petrol heads to appease. Climate crisis? What climate crisis. #ClimateCrisis #RailFates #FuelDuty

  5. And rail fares are going up by more than inflation again too, also in the context of the bus fare cap rise, while drivers receive another long-standing fuel duty freeze.

So, no effort to remove car dependency and encourage more sustainable transport choices.

  6. Continuing the fuel duty freeze *again* at a cost of £3bn while increasing the bus fair cap by 50% ... that shows the government's transport priorities then, and the car wins. Again. Screw everyone who can't, can't afford to, or does not want to drive.

Former Treasury aides say the chancellor is courting danger on UK debt and that fiscal rules must go'

'around £5bn is expected to be accounted for by freezing fuel duty again'

  9. 'Running a car is the single largest household expense (excluding mortgage repayments) for rural families, and the second largest for urban ones.'
'freezing fuel duty has done little to alleviate transport poverty. Despite costing £100 billion in lost revenue over the last 12 years, the fuel duty freeze has decreased poverty by just 0.3 percentage points.'

  10. The FT's focus on #taxation has moved on to the taxation of motoring;

As they point out (currently) zero-rated #electricvehicles count for around one in six car sales & #fuelduty accounts for around 2% of all Govt. revenue; with no other changes the shift to EVs erodes the UK effective tax base.

FT's solution is mile/road pricing. To manage this shift they suggest running the two systems in parallel with the latter managed via EV's internal software reporting.

    Q. is: who could sell this idea?

  11. If you cut £380m from active travel, but don't claim £6bn by increasing fuel duty, you're not doing it to "balance the books". It's #carbrain ideology that screws over everyone who needs or wants to travel without a car.

  12. ⛽ Chancellor urged to extend fuel duty cut as drivers face ‘pump price shock’

Reverting or increasing tax could push petrol and diesel prices beyond March 2022 levels, the RAC has warned
