If you’re familiar with Meta, this is their modus operandi: invade your privacy, get caught out in a lie, then admit it but claim it was a bug or an oversight that they’d then look into.

plot twist to my #audition tape story!

I submitted via WhatsApp, and when I went to play the vid to my partner this evening.... there's no backing track on the video. 🙀

So I re-exported, checked the track was present, and re-uploaded. Same issue. The raw video with its original soundtrack is what shows up in WhatsApp.

I wondered briefly if the track was just being very neatly phase cancelled but that seemed really unlikely since it sounded great playing back through QuickTime.

The next likeliest culprit? Caching. I hypothesised that if WA had a cached version of the original video from my camera roll, it might be (mis)using that to fake a more responsive upload experience. So I zipped a copy of the video I had checked had the track and dropped that into WA, with the aim of defeating any caching layer.

The zip took a lot longer to upload (aha!), and on downloading on a different device, the track was there as expected (result!)

Given I never dropped the raw footage into WA, the awful and inescapable conclusion is WA is proactively uploading my whole fucking camera roll without asking, and I only noticed because I pushed the feature beyond its design limits.

Good job the band appreciated a naked bassline!
