(6) you try to open the epub in Calibre. It gives you an error, because the epub is in fact encrypted.
(7) you ponder reading it in ugly adobe editions, but you're committed now. Onwards, through the fog!
In order to read it in calibre you need to remove the security of the book. In order to do that you need to install a plugin into calibre.
(8) after installing the slightly finicky plugin, finally it works and you can now actually view the epub in calibre.
(9) If you want to copy it to your hardware ereader of choice, you need to save a copy of the epub, finally without the drm, and then you can put it on your ereader.
(10) realize it's now 3am and cry yourself to sleep.No one should have to go through this shit. 3/3

Dentro de pocos días acabo el libro que estoy leyendo. Para animarme, he pensado en leer algún libro de Kim Stanley Robinson. Aunque tengo un Kindle, no quiero comprarlo a Amazon. He buscado si alguna plataforma lo vende sin DRM y nada. ¿Tengo alguna opción que no sea buscarlo en el archivo de Anna?

Pour rappel :
Amazon a supprimé 1984 sur les liseuses Kindle.
Microsoft a rendu illisible la totalité des livres vendus sur leur boutique quand celle-ci a fermé et a laissé sur le carreau la totalité de ses acheteurs.
Adobe a tenté par le passé de changer de système de DRM, cassant la compatibilité avec les liseuses et les livres déjà achetés.
Une connexion Internet active est requise sur la liseuse.

Non, ce n'est pas un mal nécessaire.
Non, ça n'empêche pas la diffusion du livre sur des sites non référencés par l'éditeur.
Non, les DRM ne sont pas vos amis.Ça sert uniquement à emmerder la personne achetant les livres.
Pourquoi utiliser un format ouvert et documenté (un fichier epub, c'est en gros, juste un ensemble de pages html + css dans un fichier zip et quelques fichiers contenant les métadonnées, sommaire, …) si c'est pour le pourrir avec un solution Adobe.

Tellement habitué aux livres numériques sans DRM que j'avais oublié que JNC (US et EU/Nina) est en fait l'exception et non la règle.
Là, je voulais acheter un roman ; pas trouvable en fr ; donc site de l'éditeur US, qui propose la version papier ou la version numérique.
Sauf que l'éditeur en question ne propose pas l'achat direct. Faut passer par une boutique comme Amazon ou Rakuten Kobo.
Je regarde la seconde boutique, tarification en € ok. Mais je pense à descendre dans la page, jusqu'à lire :

@AstaMcCarthy @BjornW twee kanttekeningen: de meeste Nederlandse boeken die ik rechtstreeks koop bij uitgevers of Libris zijn voorzien van watermerken. Die kun je dus gewoon met iets als calibre naar een gewenst formaat omzetten. En er komt wel een rechter aan te pas, maar ze hebben een soort convenant dat alle providers een winst van Brein bij een provider accepteert. Verder #fuckDRM

I often download #books (and rarely also films) simply because I can’t buy what I want #DRM-free and in an open format. I always had the intuition I was justified in doing so, but now thanks to @pluralistic I know there’s a perfect moral argument to support this practice:

Beware: When you buy books from HumbleBundle it can happen that those are only keys for Kobo. And those books are protected by Adobe DRM.
It just happened to me and now I need to figure out how I can get them onto my devices (please don´t try to help me; I will find a way). #fuckDRM
