  6. Sharing a new Anjou pear tree this #ArborDay weekend. I'm trying for a backyard #orchard following Grow A Little #FruitTree by Ann Ralph.

Unfortunately, the nursery already psyched me out of the brutal first cut. I regret not doing it just like the book said I would. It's already so much larger in just 10 days. Any hashtags specific to this part of #gardening?

  7. If you're interested in #FruitTree #grafting #HandsOn #education, see info below.

Learn the basic skill and knowledge you need to start grafting and graft your own heritage apple tree to take home!

This #workshop will describe the reasons for grafting, when to graft, and when to collect budwood. The workshop will be hands on and participants will be introduced to tree terminology, grafting tools and materials, and will be shown various grafting techniques. Participants will get the chance to practice their new skills on spare branches and once confident, do an actual graft. Each participant will be able to choose an apple variety from the heratige collection at Welland Orchard to graft on to a dwarfing rootstock, to create a new apple tree to take home.

All tools and materials will be provided.

Be sure to come dressed for the elements as this workshop will be held outdoors.

    Please register in advance:

  8. Some years ago I found a pomegranate tree beaten into submission as a hedge so I took a cutting.
Rooted it in a pot then transplanted it into the ground in #Riviersonderend [River without End] and it sat stunned for two years then realised that there were no more restrictions on growth and has now started producing fruit despite the 35°C heat.

  14. Gardener hivemind: Re: Fruit trees

I planted two 2-year-old Bartlett pear trees a year ago to revive our orchard. One didn’t survive - our tree guy says it was probably root-bound in the pot from the grower. The other was gorgeous and healthy, leafed out and growing until a porcupine stripped it naked overnight this August. It broke my heart because it had one wee pear on it! Branches were broken from the beast crawling all over it, all the leaves stripped off, and nothing green left.

Question: Is there anything I can do to help it recover? I am watering it every two weeks as the summer has been brutally dry, and I give it liquid seaweed/fish fertilizer once a month. It’s mulched with shredded bark mulch, but clear right beside the trunk.

The porcupine also stripped a 40-year-old Bosc pear tree, and two hardy cherry trees. It reminds me of what is happening to the good things in the world that people spent decades building, only to be hollowed out almost overnight by careless, selfish people…

    Anyway…trees. Any advice is helpful.

  15. #TGIF Just before light rain started, we had a yard time. My fig tree, for the first time since it was planted some 14 years ago, bore fruits to an edible stage. Figs always fell while they were green. Not my favorite fruit, but I ate two and pretty good. I could see birds have eaten some.
Tired, and so is Kengo (from what?).
Have a good evening and a great weekend, everyone.

  16. Harvest from our little cherry tree. We harvest them before they fully ripen because my wife is mildly allergic to cherries and can only eat them before skin of the fruit fully darkens.

  19. The old Esopus Spitzenburg tree. I think I transplanted it here in 2012, it was probably 3 years old from seedling if it wasn't just a root sucker if the other tree is grafted on a spitz root stock because it doesn't grow very fast either. So probably 15 years old. I haven't pruned it much if ever except to get wood for the grafts I did. It might be 10 feet tall now with a 4 inch trunk maybe.

  20. The bosc pear and brooks plum. I don't think the bosc will support 1 pear but I'll see what sets and maybe find one low and close to the trunk. The Brooks plum should support a handful of fruit.
