  1. “Katarsis” by She Past Away

I love the mashup of this Turkish rock song with footage of roosting fruit bats. It makes it look like they’re raving in a club.

  2. Wrap Artists of the Year
Rescued baby flying foxes rest, wrapped up, after being injured by giant hailstones, some as large as a cricket ball, in Queensland storms, #Australia, in November. Almost 120 fruit bats (as they are also known) were injured, some critically, before being rescued by volunteers and admitted to the RSPCA wildlife hospital.

  3. #FruitBats Have #Cognitive Abilities Previously Believed to Be Exclusive to #Humans, Research Finds. “We wanted to see whether the bats could tell that time had elapsed and behave accordingly. We found that after 1 day of captivity, the #bats would return to trees visited on previous night. However, when a whole week had gone by, older bats, based on past experience, avoided trees that had stopped bearing fruit in the interval." ecowatch.com/fruit-bats-cognit #intelligence #future #oriented #behaviors

  8. This year's little red flying fox (fruit bat) colony is huge! In 24 years here, I've never seen it this big. This photo shows the usual encampment alongside the western edge of Stoney Creek south of the bridge, but it doesn't usually go right to the creek's edge.

And this year they've crossed the creek, and also moved into the wetlands area north east of the bridge.

At dusk, the whole sky seems to be filled with bats.

  9. The locals are out.
The background noise comes from our friendly mole crickets, very happy after recent rain.

  10. A flying fox's long wingspan makes walking on the ground very difficult, so to drink, they dip and soak their bellies in water. But while the bats are looking for a drink, the river crocodiles are looking for food.

  11. A few days ago, we went for a walk along the Merri Creek in Clifton Hill near sunset. Perfect timing for viewing a great number of bats. Here's a sequence of photos toward Melbourne that show how quickly the sky changed over just eight minutes.
