  1. When #FrontierElite2 was released in 1993, as a nod to #Elite from the 1980s, 11 of the original star systems were included. These were centred on the important system of Lave, an agricultural/capitalist dictatorship, and are sometimes referred to as the "Old Worlds".

  2. Acorn User magazine took a novel approach in its December 1991 appraisal of #ArcElite. Two opposing views were provided; one for and one against the game. Perhaps the fairest thing to say is that - amazing as #ArcElite was - by the 1990s, the world was ready for #FrontierElite2.

  4. Despite a few graphical glitches and planets that resemble snooker balls, #glFrontier is a great update to #FrontierElite2 with much-improved visuals; here is the intro sequence. Game modified from the #AtariST code by Tom Morton. Music (c) Dave Lowe.

  6. #BBCElite in 1984 kick-started the inclusion of lots of physical extras in computer game boxes. By the time #FrontierElite2 arrived in 1993, this was well established and the 90s probably represents the peak of computer gaming. Waiting for a 100Gb download just isn't the same!

  8. Try not to get caught by Chief Inspector Braben if you're flying a stolen ship in #FrontierElite2 - the penalty is likely to be a life sentence of hard labour, or worse! Presumably the same punishment applies for playing pirated computer games... 😯

  9. #FrontierElite2 was converted for Commodore's #CD32 and was nicely reworked to use the controller. Due to the machine only having 1KB of non-volatile memory, the game could only be saved when in space, not when docked at a space station! It did run quickly and smoothly though.

  10. Unlike today, in 1993 the quality of printed game artwork was still far superior to actual in-game graphics. Nevertheless, CU Amiga magazine's hype machine went into overdrive for #FrontierElite2 in the November edition. Even the rolling demo would "stun you into insanity"!

  12. The 1990s really was a golden age for computer games. Big box releases complemented the games perfectly, none more so than #FrontierElite2 (1993) with its instruction manual, star systems gazetteer, game world fiction and - of course - that beautiful star map 😍

  13. Here's a rarity - a Portuguese version of #FrontierElite2 with all the printed material in Portuguese. As far as I can tell, the game is in English unfortunately. Sadly, I'm still scratching my head trying to find a way to install the game and run it through DOSBox 🤔

  14. If you still enjoy playing #FrontierElite2 you might want to take a look at #glFrontier by Tom Morton. The basic game is unchanged, but the graphics are far clearer and it runs much faster than the original.

  15. This full computer system bundle included a copy of Geoff Crammond's Formula One Grand Prix. It was an incredible gift that I am so grateful to have received when I was a 13. (Thanks Mum and Dad). youtu.be/Tp4eubpdEWA #simracing #retrogaming #amigasforever #f1gp #frontierelite2 #commodore

  16. Frontier Elite II is probably the most ambitious and influential space trading and combat simulation game ever made. It’s so wast and complex that I couldn’t grasp it as a kid, but it became one of my favorites as an adult.

Here is how to play it, if you never tried before. I really enjoyed writing this:

In truth, the gameplay was usually much more restrictive in that time (one of the reason #FrontierElite2 was a revolution) but on the other hand, because you had to find out (or make up) everything by yourself, you could say that gaming, in itself, was an open world experience.

Reflecting upon it, 35 years later, it does seems that the ones who truly fucked my brain were the ones insisting that everything i do need to have a purpose.
#FrontierElite2 may be blessed for helping me resisting to those morons :)
