  1. The Life and Death of Fritz the Cat

Back in January, The Life and Death of Fritz the Cat saw its first ever re-release for the first time since the original publication of the title back in the 90s.

For those who aren’t aware of the book; The Life and Death of Fritz the Cat comprises of every Fritz the Cat comic strip that Robert Crumb has released, from the early Fritz Sketchbook Strips to the infamous 1972 strip, Fritz the Cat Superstar which saw Fritz killed off by an ex-girlfriend of his with an icepick.

Fritz the Cat had two animated films; the 1972 movie that was based on several Fritz the Cat Comic Strips that were adapted for the film, and the 1974 sequel, The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat, a non-linear storyline which was not based on any Fritz the Cat Comic Strips.

I purchased the Paperback reissue a while back, it’s a great collection of every single Fritz the Cat Comic Strip that’s been released. Since the comics are adults only, I would recommend the book to you 🙂

  2. Next movie watched:
I finally watched "The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat."

The first one, while being quite strange and fucked up, still is a movie I occasionally get back to for its "dirty" style, themes of police violence and racism, and, well, because Charlene, Winston (fox) and especially Dee-Dee are cute.

This one, well...the artstyle still has the same dirty look and the movie still certainty feels like a mix of drug trips, or something. 😅

Sadly the direction of being split into 9 or 10 mostly independent segments feels very random.

The main story about Fritz' family would've had potential to work by combining the fitting segments (meeting "God", pawn shop, delivery job) and leaving out the parts ending with death.

    Chita is cute, though!

  3. CW: Skimpy-clothed cartoon chars, DVD

The disk I hoped I'd get arrived!

"Fritz the Cat" and its sequel. The special thing about it is that both movies have German and original English audio, which was the version I was always hoping to get.

I've actually never seen the sequel.

In case you don't know it: It's a (comic-based) movie featuring cartoon animals, but its whole story is (actually slightly depicted) sex, drugs and (police) violence.

I don't consider it a "favorite", but somehow enjoy it.

Maybe because it was a cartoon with "porn" that got into cinema? Maybe because it has the lovely chubby cat? Maybe the whole theme is dirty and gritty, so unusual for a "cute animal cartoon"? I don't know. 😅

But I'm glad I got it on disk!

    Fun Fact: In Germany it's 16+, not 18 / 21.

  4. To be honest: mostly because she's a bit chubby, I love that.
Also, the little shyness is cute and her hair looks great with the color of her sweater, for the bit of time she gets to wear it.

So, yeah. Not much of her in the movie, but I consider her cute, good-hearted, caring and curious, and that's lovely.

I'd love to learn more about her when she's not falling for horny never-do-well charmers like Fritz. 😁😅

  5. And that's very much all we learn, not just about Dee-Dee, but all of the three girls.
Because of this it's hard to really differentiate between the three's personalities.
Due to gestures, mimic and behavior when it comes to sexual encounters, though, Dee-Dee seems to be a bit shy and cute, but certainly very open.

With the three characters otherwise so similar, why Dee-Dee especially?

  6. that's into philosophic discussions and finding the "truth" and meaning of life.
Along with her friend she seems to be interested in making sure Black people, depicted as crows in the movie, get their rights and have their culture understood and supported.

In that, though, all of them are a bit naive and blue-eyed, not certain how to do it correctly, as they ultimately have no clue about Black people and their lifes.

BUT they have good intentions and pure hearts.

  7. Ya know what?
Let me start with Dee-Dee, the girl from Fritz the Cat that I just mentioned.

Now, the movie is from 1972, so, it's not really impressive, visually, forgive me that.

Dee-Dee, like her two friends, doesn't have too much of a role, they're mostly a sexual fling for Fritz, so the three don't really have THAT much to say about.

    But well:
Dee-Dee, like her friends, is, for the 1970s, a smart, interested and open minded student that

  8. "Fritz the Cat" is a "guilty pleasure" movie for me. (It's 18+, so, you're warned!)

Maybe because it's totally fucked up, maybe because it featured cartoon sex in a commercially released movie, maybe because it criticizes police violence.

A bit of everything, I guess.

But also because I still got the hots for that shy, chubby blonde cat girl and I still considered getting a commission with her and my Bryan some day! (with correct tail positions, contrary to what the movie did.)

  9. Cartoon Cats Drink & Draw 8/16/2023

Tried to do Fritz the cat in the style of R. Crumb and then I was told to draw something called a Squanchy. Drew it with a bottle of "Dos Gatos."
