For some reason, I've never tried the Belgian frites place near the Filmhouse.

Since I ate in the FH after last night's festival screening, I thought I'd try it tonight. Very unhealthy but yummy dirty fries with chunks of blue cheese. Mmm. Washed down with Nutella milkshake.

My lock screen is of Mathieu van der Poel wearing the yellow jersey at the 2025 Tour de France, on a road through a field of wheat or tall, dry grass. The Tour de France generates beautiful images taken by skilled photographers as it winds around France. I love how the scenery under summer skies, colourful jerseys and bikes create opportunities for striking photos.

My wallpaper shows a close up of my frites and mayonnaise, taken at the Cyclo-Cross World Championships in Hoogerheide, The Netherlands 🇳🇱, in 2014. It reminds me how cycling is cultural and about more than pushing pedals. And how nice frites are! 😋

“Jäger fries” from Ludwig’s Biergarten in Mountain View. Mushroom sauce, gruyere, and green onions. Not bad, I’d have them again. I give them credit for a pretty good variation on the usual cheese fries. Ludwig’s is about as German as it gets in California: several different Würste, beef Gulasch, Schweinshaxe (!), and several different kinds of Schnitzel — including vegan. And a selection of German beers, of course. (From October; I forgot to post it then.)

Friday lunch at St. John’s in Sunnyvale. Cheesesteak sandwich was ok; their burgers are better. Also a plate of blue cheese bacon fries. (Canadian friend said it looked like poutine.) Not bad, but it had a rather overwhelming amount of blue cheese. Sour cream didn’t add anything. The flavored ketchups are nice though, but unfortunately there’s no mayonnaise. St. John’s plain fries are better and are crispier than usual for fries in the US.

#Fries and a BLT at Mustard’s Grill SFO before my flight to AMS on the way to #Devoxx. They were rather plain, but they were very hot and fairly crispy which was nice. Looking forward though to some real Vlaamse #Frites!

Crab sandwich with crab fries (fries topped with garlic aioli and crab meat) at a local street festival. Fairly crispy with LOTS of garlic. Turns out that in the US you can get fries topped with mayonnaise as long as it’s called aioli. And it is possible to get good fries in the US, but a) most fries are bad, b) we don’t have dedicated fries shops, so you have to hunt around to find good fries.
