  10. CW: Long Post about Vacation, Happy

So my wife already posted but I figured I would give my two cents/approach from a different perspective for the vacation. I've never been this far north in Continental Europe. The people in Schleswig-Holstein/Frisia are built different. They lost Rungholt to the sea and they never really forgave. It's basically Frisian Atlantis. They've spent 400 years trying to reclaim it from the sea.

Their lives come with the tide, and leave with the tide. It leads to a more laid back and familiar way of approaching Germanness. I've been having to speak German now at work and in life for a long time. This is the first time I ever felt like I was a part of the culture. I was a part of the experience.

    It was nice to have
@thatfrisiangirlish and my interplay make people laugh. I even had to make an emergency phone call when we were delayed by a double whammy of traffic in Bremen and Hamburg. No help required. No clarification required. I never had someone switch to english for me, ask where I was from or whatever. I was just there and I didn't feel forced.

The collossal amount of effort I have put into learning German and integrating really paid off. It took almost four years to get to this point. Another cool and interesting thing was how our queer status made us unique enough to approach. Not to say we received a homophobia, anything but. Being one of the lesbian couples gave us a uniqueness that people sought us out to talk to us. A very rewarding experience given how awful things were in my home country and still increasingly are.

I found the Frisians open enough to really feel invited but German enough that my boundaries were never even pushed slightly. I learned a lot and I don't think I've ever had a vacation that was half so rewarding or a quarter so relaxed. We will visit again, Frisia.

  16. @unixjunk1e Thanks, interesting!

You probably know then, but there are still active Frisian dialects in Germany and in Denmark, because once they were part of the larger area of Frisia.

    There's even a Frisian song-festival liet-international.com/

(hmm no Frisian Flag emoij yet on Mastodon)

  24. Imagine the villagers of North Frisia who survived the Black Death in 1350-52. Ten years later a millennial storm surge obliterated 42 church parishes, turning them into featureless tidal flats. Life's a bitch, huh?
