  1. Fringe review: ‘Underserved: Recipes for Resilience’ is a disorientingly scattershot, if charming, one-woman show – Twin Cities

  2. A unique #theatrical #performance inspired by #Yiddish #folktales features dead #Jews dancing at a cemetery, a prophet appearing in the form of a bunny rabbit and a stone-munching worm named Shamir. It all takes place within the confines of a 2’ X 4’ box known as a #cranky and it’s coming to #NewYork later this month as part of the International #Puppet #FringeFestival.

For those unfamiliar with the decidedly low-tech medium, #crankies are portable stages through which a panorama is scrolled by cranking a pair of wooden dowels. The characters and scenery on the scroll are usually accompanied by #narration and #music, in this case a live #klezmer trio. In backlit crankies, #shadowpuppets can also be used for characters.

The cranky performance of #ShternaandtheLostVoice was created by the #MagidEnsemble, a far-flung interdisciplinary collective that includes a #storyteller, a #graphicartist and three former members of the #Boston klezmer band #Mamaliga."

  10. Note: slight "#mature" theme here. I'm not applying a CW - when I was a kid, this would have caused a 12-year-old to titter, but kids these days have read and seen far more explicit stuff a thousand times.

So I wanted to post something that wasn't politics, that isn't news or topical. Something amusing, maybe, and something I've not posted before. I happened to be reminded of the novel Singularity Sky by Charles Stross yesterday, which has as #inspiration for part of it the #Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

That reminded me of a Fringe experience of mine. So here it is. It won't make you rich, or smarter, or wiser, but maybe will give you a laugh.

My partner and I went to a tiny Fringe festival in a small town some years ago. It was basically a whistle stop between two cities in western Canada; I have no idea why the touring Fringe would even stop there, but it did, at least some of it.

One of the performances we saw was a version of MacBeth. It was highly #abbreviated, sort of a cross between a Reader's Digest condensed version, and what you would get if P.D.Q. Bach had an English cousin who did Shakespeare.

  14. The Toronto Fringe has been forced to make so many cuts this year. It looks theoretically possible for one person (with tight scheduling and a lot of running) to be able to see every single show in the 2024 Fringe.

That hasn’t happened in years. I don’t think it’s ever happened since I started going to the Fringe here. This is a scary sign of what’s to come for anyone who cares about the arts today. (Or about having really good American television shows ten years from now. The Fringe is an incubator for the decade-long overnight successes of tomorrow.)

  15. More #Theatricalia from 1977 #Edinburgh #FringeFestival : two productions I was involved in as part of the backstage team, led by the late Ian Larkin.

Our theatre was the dance hall above the cateen at the bus depot on Annandale St. We built a 300 seat auditorium, stage & lighting/sound tower from 20 tons of scaffolding.

Posters were designed by Charles Maude (brother of Sir Francis). Charles, who died of AIDS long ago, also designed the stage & sets.

Will add more as a🧵 @dracos

  16. We have a quest to visit an Irish pub in 32 countries.

So during our time in Edinburgh in August, we stopped for a Guinness in an Irish pub located under a bridge arch along the Royal Mile.

It was all decked out for a stand-up comedy event as part of the Fringe Festival—and definitely ranked among the more interesting venues we’ve been to.
